I admit that I am not in the know about HS recruits and their abilities as they relate to the next level, but now that we need at least 2 point guards, a center and a forward my question is do we expect them to get similar PT as this year’s freshman got?
Can any of these so called 5 star level players likely start for us or get significant minutes with at least 3 portal players coming? UConn’s roster seems to be in The Twilight Zone at the moment.

I don't think we'll be recruiting a center unless our staff isn't very confident in Reibe. All 3 of the American hs recruits are burger boys.... 3/4 of our recruits this year are better ranked than everyone last year. I doubt every one of them sees serious minutes, but they are on the whole more talented.

Mullins seems likely to get real minutes. He's the #15 ranked kid in the class and a ridiculous shooter. He's only 6'5 185lbs or so, which is the only concern. Very nice athlete. HS and AAU competition level hasn't been great so he may have some bumps in the road.

Reibe is a stretch big. Not terribly athletic or strong but has a lot of skill relative to his position. I suspect we'll slot him in playing 15mpg or so behind Reed. HS and international competition levels have been solid. He's been inconsistent from what I've seen. Needs to get in the gym... he's soft.

Adams is 6'5 but excruciatingly scrawny. HS and AAU competition level have been the highest level it gets. Averaged like 16/6/2 in the best hs league in America. Shooting has gone up and down... 36% or so in AAU, but only 28% in hs. FT% has ranged from 60% to 80% over the last couple years too. I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a redshirt-ish season to get stronger.

Furphy is an enigma. He has great size and elite skill (shooting, passing, dribbling with both hands) but is not athletic and needs to lose 15lbs of babyfat. He could be our next Luka or he could sit the bench for a couple years and leave. It's all just guesses... no one knows.

I'll take a Luka.

Adams is a total wild card to me. He at times looks quite skilled and others looks pretty bad. He looks totally unprepared physically for the Big East and his recruitment was strange. For a while he was the top player, rankings wise, that we were recruiting, but we were also far and away the biggest name school recruiting him and most here preferred some of the other guys that we lost.

I think Furphy will play quite a bit. He does lots of stuff that is just natural IQ and talent. Hopefully he’s in good enough shape to impact from the start.

Has a burger boy ever redshirted coming out of high school. Not doubting your knowledge maybe I am missing something. Did he jump up a grade graduate early from HS putting him in that very young freshman category?

..we were also far and away the biggest name school recruiting him..
His final list was UConn, Michigan St. and Tennessee. The other two teams are playing in the elite 8 today lol.

Before that Adams had Alabama, Notre Dame, and NC State in his final six. Alabama being a back to back Elite Eight team.

This statement is just wrong unless you count any program besides Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and UNC “far and away” smaller names than UConn.

Except McNeeley of course. But I know what you meant, higher than Nowell and Abraham.

I would think all 4 freshman are expecting to play next year, and I do expect 2/3 of them to play 20 minutes a game or so… unfortunately I would expect that if any of them don’t get big minutes next year they won’t be around as sophomores

Red shirts technically just don't really happen much any more in basketball. But as far as a de facto redshirt season from the 2024 burger boys, only one I could think of is John Bol.

I'm guessing we do a bit of throwing Adams into the fire at PG/SG and get him 5-10mpg. Less than Mullins, more than Mahaney (if he stays).

I'd guess Mullins gets 25 minutes regardless of roster construction and is competing with Jaylin for the starting 3 spot.

Based on current roster construction I'd say Adams and Reibe are getting 10-15 minutes as the backup PG and C. Reibe feels locked into that role, but I could see a veteran PG coming from the portal and moving Adams more off ball.

Furphy is a complete wild card, no idea what to expect and the expectations are all over the place. I could see anywhere from a development year ala Abraham or 10-15 minutes in the Ross role off the bench

I believe Jailyn will be starting at the 4. It will be Transfer PG, Ball, Mullins, Stewart, and Reed

Brian Butch did like 20 years ago at Wisconsin.

No inside info or anything, but I have a hunch that if we don't have a returning starter at the 4 spot we'll be bringing in a transfer. We've already been in contact supposedly with Amarri Monroe and Keyshawn Hall who'd be 4's here

We'd need a huge PG like Demary Jr. For Mullins to work at the 3 defensively. I can't see him holding up defending the 3.

Offensively? Absolutely.

We are definitely recruiting a 1 and a 4. That much is obvious. The bench roles we may recruit for aren't so clear yet IMO

I cannot imagine Adams playing defense for Izzo. His lack of any muscle and strength made his recruitment muted relative to his ranking in my eyes. When I saw him play 2 games, I too felt this is gonna be a bench/weight room freshman year. Which makes me question the ranking. Hope I am very wrong

Thanks I actually missed the -ish on redshirt got it now. I guess that will all be based on what they all earn as far as PT. I am guessing if we get the PG we are looking for and Ball, Reed stay along with Stewart the guys that have the seniority and loyalty to the program will get minutes.

Although it can be tough on the fans Hurley’s loyalty (see Pitino/Louis Jr) is one of the reasons we have had more high level talent stay after freshman years that did not pan out in the PT area.

Then my concern becomes what does the starting lineup look like.

PG TBD hopefully on the big side who can shoot and get to the hoop. Yeah not asking for much there.

SG Ball one more off season to work on his off hand to help him get to the basket. I also would like to see more effective head/pump fakes to get the defender committed and help make room for his shot or get that half step he needs to get past the defender and to the hoop. The way he shoots he really needs to work on the craft of getting open and selling the pump fakes. Let’s be honest he has no….right hand that is a must for the next level. I know the drills we used to use to improve the off hand. Certain there r better ones now. But a player can improve their off hand it takes commitment and work.

SF/SG Mullins. In all honesty I don’t follow these players or watch much video on them. So really relying on what I read on the BY to make any assessment.

PF Stewart. Definitely a stretch four but in the smaller side for the position. He has the strength to cover some PF but size still a conern.

C Reed Jr- This guy has the ability to be stud he has quick feet great touch and he can block shots. I made kind of a Queen MD comp in an earlier thread. Clearly Taris is supremely gifted for his size please Hurley find the always on switch.

Bench

C-or stretch 4 Reibe
SG/SF Furphy
G Does Aiden come back. Clearly he and Hurley have a special relationship.

Now we are at eight so Adam’s sees time in a nine slot role. We all know it will be an 8 man rotation for the most part by the time we get to mid March.

Wonder how what I just wrote on lineup will even be close.

I am guessing we have three starters already penciled in with Reed, Stewart and Ball.

Yeah that’s kind of the point. I’ve followed recruiting for a long, long time and it’s pretty rare that a top 20, 5 star McDonald’s AA type doesn’t have at least one of those listed/interested, etc. does it mean he sucks? Of course not. I just thought it was an odd mix of teams.
