He may not know football on an expert level but I think he knows how to idenfity 'winnahs'. . . He also would be able to communicate the challenges he faced when he came to UConn, which IMO were far larger than what the new FB HC will face

And there should be at least a seven- figure bonus for reaching a BCS game -- or playoff (playoffs?) -- in the new coach's contract. Shoot, tie it to CR - if performance leads to school getting P5 invite -- Make it rain, as the kids say

Nope. Jim role is getting contributions to the university and being a generic goodwill ambassador. He was a great basketball coach, but he's not a panacea.

Not saying let him decide who to hire, but nothing wrong with letting him vet the candidates. I trust his judgement way more than Larry McHugh's

I was gonna say you want football people to have input but A) Warde is football people B) technically so are the CT HSFB coaches. I think Warde probably has the contacts to phone the right people while he's doing due diligence / vetting. No need for Neinas, though maybe they'll have a consultant anyway. Keep the CTHSFB coaches at the back of the bus... send them a ham or something to make them feel like they've been remembered.

Back of the bus? Sorry; but, no BCS level team has been successful solely built on CT HS recruits.

After the last hire, put them on a second bus and tell the driver to take them to the Yukon Territory and not UConn Country. By time the thaw out after a winter in Whitehorse, UConn football will hopefully have their coach and be on the road to respectability again.

the CT High School Football coaches should NOT be telling UConn who to hire. I would like to see an UP and Coming assistant Coach who is young to get the job.

Maybe I am open to see what TJ can do...

Not a completely horrible idea. I can't think a better way to assure the next coach isn't a complete zero. I was going to say but I'd have had to wait 142 seconds to do that.

Leave the CT coaches out of this. If we bring in a winner we'll get CT recruits, if not, who cares? CT doesn't produce top talent anyways

There's the answer. JC's job can be to keep McHugh occupied until after the new head coach is hired.

Honestly what better judge of character does UConn have at its disposal?

Warde Manuel is a football guy first and foremost. If he needs a committee, he isn't the guy. I know UCONN will "form a committee" including professors, administrators and other coaches, but Warde should be driving this bus.

My wish is that we tell Chuck Neinas to go pound sand, as he was the the first to speak of the Big 5 conferences. HE is no better than the agent trying to secure cash for a player to go to a school. And is his $50k gave us the coaching pool the first time around, we should sue him for selling Hathaway the bill of goods!!

Great Idea! Jim's experience and perspective gives him a unique insight into what it takes to WIN (WIN BIG) and to do so at UCONN. He needs to be on the Search Committee. I'd also be happy to put Burton on the Committee.

Can they do a worse job than the prior committe did? I don't think so.

I think you all are giving the Connecticut High School Coaches far too much criticism. They were only relevant to the extent that Edsall pissed them off. We are a small state ... and a good HS relations guy can handle their needs easily. I'm not sure they played all that big a role with Hathaway. That guy had other issues.

Far too harsh. No one is saying you could build a power house program full of CT kids. Not even close. But the Matt Shaughnessy, Dan Orlovsky, Tyler Murphy, Graham Stewart types are important to this program to pretend otherwise is naive.

I'd get off Chuck Neinas' back. What do you want him to do? He was a Big 12 commissioner. Of course he's going to be promoting the Big 5, and if we ever get in, we're not going to look back and feel particularly sorry for the have-nots. We didn't before, and we won't next time (WHEN we get in - and we will). No one on the inside cares about those left out. No one. I'm not sure where Neinas' roots are, I'm assuming Texas or Okla, or somewhere near. He owes us nothing, and we were a very small account for his company. I'd pay him another $50K and see if he knows of anyone out there that might be interested . . . Rich Rod ain't comin through that door . . .

Good point about JC being on the committee.
