Geno's response to a question about Pat Summitt - at the very end - is really classy. The whole thing is good, but that comment was really impressive.

Loved Kelly's comments and comfort level. Very articulate and expressive, plus she tasseled Geno's hair as she got up to leave.

Geno's comments on Pat at the end were really classy and deeply respectful.

I watched PSU presser for a bit ... suitably contrite/whipped ... but handled with control

Watching Bentley field questions was painful. Gotta feel for the kids. They really shouldn't have to go through that.

Au contrar ... maybe next year she will know how to handle an interview. 'Spect Coach Coq was thinking bring in on when they were asking her to obvious questions.

Geno made some very good comments about Pat Summitt. Why she has been so successful.

Interesting ... anyone else notice that Dolson gave Geno a pat on the back. Maybe she does that all the time--I don't get to watch the team as much as most of you guys.

It's pretty clear that the young women on the team see a side of Geno that we're not exposed to very often, the paternal side if you will. It's very clear watching any of Geno's players or ex-players when they're around him. With rare exception they seem very comfortable around him--more comfortable than most players, men or women, seem around their coaches. He must develop a very close relationship with the players that allows them not to take the ranting personally, just try to use it as motivation.

Getting so many top recruits and athletes doesn't hurt.
Yes it does help. Having the players both Pat and Geno have helped them win a lot of games.

Pat Summitt has been a coach of one of the top two programs over the course of three different decades. And in each one, the other program in the top two was different. The only coach who comes close to understanding what that's like is Geno (maybe Tara as well). Geno had the #3 program of the 1990s, the #1 program of the 2000s, and has a very good shot of having the #1 program of the 2010s as well (certainly top two is likely). So Geno knows what it takes to build a program, how many things could have gone differently, etc., and then how difficult it is to maintain that level of success year in and year out. Despite the immense differences in personal style, they probably understand each other and appreciate each other's professional accomplishments more tangibly than anyone else in their field. Geno certainly demonstrated a bit of that in the press conference.

Really, I assume you are not meaning anyone here.

Edit: Oh, I just looked at that other board. Unbelievable.

Geno is damned if he says something, damned if he says nothing.

Not that the opinion of either fanbase matters in this situation, but I thought Geno took the high road that travels OVER the original high road.

There was another thread talkingt about his comments about only a handful of coaches - in that thread it wasn't clear that he was refering to specifically coaching them like basketball players and not as female basketball players. I think with that caviate he is correct in an historical sense. I think one of the positive changes with the new generation of coaches coming up is that more of them coach in that style. Some of it has to do with more ex-pro players who are coaching, and also ex college players who were treated as athletes and not as women athletes.

There was a moment when Kelly got up to leave that she and Geno talked and she ruffled his hair as she left. It seemed ot me he looked emotional afterwards and tried to cover his facial reaction with his hand.

Although a little dated in 2012, I would still recommend a reading (or re-reading) of "The Same River Twice" by John Walters to better understand Geno and his relationships with his coaches and players.

It's a sorry individual that ignores the positives in life and chooses to concentrate on the negatives instead. Let anyone that doubts Geno's motives chew on this:

When the news broke of Summitt's condition, one of the first to call her was Auriemma. Since then, the two have exchanged letters and correspondence. And when the Foundation was created, one of the first people to donate was Auriemma.
And those acts moved Summitt deeply.
"This is so much more about basketball, this is about life," said Danielle Donehew, the associate commissioner for women's basketball in the Big East and the director of Summitt's Foundation by phone from Raleigh, N.C., on Monday. "Pat was moved by the support from Geno and she has been equally moved by all the cards and letters of support from the UConn fans. Pat has been truly touched."

Nan, I think Elsberry's article should be pinned at the top of the board separate from the other news articles. I am positive that most fans - CT and TN - are not aware that Geno and Pat have already ACTIVELY begun to move on.

Simple but true: Life is more important than basketball.
