While reports late Thursday night speculated that invitations to potential new league members would be discussed —or even handed out —that turned out not to be the case. According to one person familiar with the topics discussed on the call, the talk was not about expansion, but raising the exit fee to leave the Big East.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because internal league matters are not to be discussed publicly

LOL! Anonymity takes care of silence. No way exits fee increases will be agreed upon by any of the football BE schools except USF. All the other schools are in play.

Rumor has it the exit fees included a Big Mac, large fries and a shake. An apple pie was turned down and it is believed Marinara sauce was holding out for the apple pie to be thrown in.

Well of course this is what they discussed. Let's try this again: the basketball schools will gladly invite UCF and ECU if UConn and WVU and Louisville are staying. If UConn and WVU and Louisville aren't staying, they will abandon the football league and act accordingly without inviting ECU and UCF. The choice is totally up to the football schools. But it is absurd to think the conference can expand until the members make a commitment to it.

This does not need to be solved in a week. We have two and a half years until we let Pitt and syracuse out. UConn and WVU and LV are acting rationally by giving it a little time to play out and see if they have a better option than committing to the Big East. Where are UCF and ECU going in the interim?

Raising fees? The last act of desperation.

Nowhere! No point to adding anyone right now.

Stupid Question: What are done with the exit fees that teams leaving the conference have to pay? Are they distrubuted evenly across all Big East schools? Do the football schools get a larger portion?

Theoretically, we could actually get paid to leave the Big East. Syracuse, Pitt, and TCU have already officially given their notice to leave the conference and have to pay $5MM each (at minimum, if not more if to negotiate leaving earlier than 27 mo). Say that Missouri goes to the SEC and then the Big 12 takes Cincinnati, WVU, and Louisville....thus they then submit their resignation from the conference and are required to pay the $5MM each. We are still officially in the conference at that point. Say that then Notre Dame and UConn go to the ACC. We could theoretically collect the exit fees from the 6 schools leaving before us to pay for our exit fee when we leave!

Again, I know the $5MM exit fee is not a barrier to anyone leaving the conference and isn't really that big of a deal. But just had the thought and was interested to see if anyone knows how the exit fees are distributed and when.

Let's face it it's the basketball only schools that seek to raise the exit fee. These schools will share in the 1.5 mil that cuse Pitt & TCU will pay. They'll alo get more when 3-6 more FB schools leave.
I say the 6 FB schools stand up against raising the exit fee. After all Air Force & Navy won't join. FIU, Central Fla., E. Car & Temple are not schools that make it more difficult to leave. Why would anyone wish to pay more than 5mil to leave a league like that. Only the hoops only teams.

I'm sure that President Herbst wouldn't vote to increase the exit fee even by a penny. Her most recent communication, while not satisfying us here on the Boneyard (who are looking for instant feedback/gratification obviously) is well thought out: she is on top of it and it will play out over time...

If raising the exit fee is required in order to expand the league then Herbst should vote to raise the exit fee. It would be wise for her to assume UCONN will be in the Big East for the next 20 years and do whatever is necessary to make the conference strong. Always assume the ACC will whisper in your ear before it stabs you in the back.

expanding the big east right now with a higher exit fee would be the absolute worst thing for uconn right now.

I just got a visual that once all parties were dialed in, Marinatto started off by saying "our first order of business is to discuss raising the exit fees for all schools" at which point not another word was spoken, there were just 6 clicks from the FB presidents hanging up, and the call ended.

The tragic thing is the conference is following your advice.

Unfortunately I don't get a prize when the Big East vanishes because of this terrible advice.

so you'd like to further lock us into this sinking ship of a conference? the chances all 6 remaining football schools are still here when the dust settles is extremely low. big east chaos is better for us in the end. if anything, it further forces ND's hand to make a move.

I have said this a million times but nobody seems to get it. The best way to get an invite into the ACC is for their to be a strong Big East for UConn. There is ZERO chance the ACC will ever take UConn if the Big East collapses. Chaos is disastrous for UConn.

Ever heard the saying "the best way to get a job is to have a job"? Same goes for conference affiliation.

If the ACC sees that we are about to sign some long-term rights fee lockup, it will know it has to make a decision on UConn. If the ACC chooses to do nothing and lets us sign, we have our answer.

Well there are parts of your premise that are correct.

You ignore the fact that there is no way in the world to create a strong Big East.

How can one raise the exit fee when your members are FIU, Central Fla, ECU, and Temple.
I don't think the ACC even considers these schools as any sort of competetion. Neither should UConn or the other FB schools left.
