Can someone shed some light on some programs starting practice so early? It used to be a mid October thing I thought. Did the NCAA change the rule? Did UCONN start practicing yet? I haven't seen anything on twitter or instagram.

NCAA changed it a couple years back. I know the men’s team started practicing, but not for sure about women’s especially since it seems players went home for the weekend. I remember reading an article a while back Geno saying he’s going to keep starting practice the original mid October date.

I may be wrong but I believe schools can start practice whenever they like but are limited in how many practices they can have.

Pretty certain the rule states something like 40 days before first game but limits to 30 practices in those 40 days

I believe that the Men and Women now have the same rules on this topic. Games can now begin as early as November 6th. It used to be November 9th.
Practice can begin as early as 42 days before the first game.
Now, the men have already practiced, so I believe the women have been free to do so also. I have not heard if the women have begun yet.

The change a few years ago 2011? was not just a change to the "start of official practices" it was much more comprehensive to include summer sessions. Prior to this change, off season practices were student led (open gyms) with coaches not allowed in the gym. Under the new rule as long as S/A are taking classes they are allowed to have workouts supervised by coaches limited to ???: 20 hours per week, number of players at a time , and 6 days a week.
There has always been the provision to start practices before everyone else if your team is involved in an early season tournament like the Preseason NIT or the hall of fame tip off. More and more of these tournaments are popping up and more coaches are deciding to participate in these tournaments just to get the early start.
