Quick Update:

In the Daily Campus, they had an article about the practice facility. Starting next month, Memorial Stadium will start to be demolished. Construction will start in the summer/fall. They have raised $17.2 million so far.

out of curiosity, what's the total cost realistically (the reality is usually $5-10 mil higher than the estimate). probably a dumb question, but what if the go thru the $17 mil? once it breaks ground do they expect a bunch of other donations to materialize to give them enough to complete the project? i was just curious how it was going to work...

That's fairly realistic. People are more inclined to give once things get started. Of course you run the risk of the Rutgers stadium debacle. (Just went by there last weekend. I have to admit it looks good on River Road.)

Budget is around $35 million - should be within budget - no tax dollars being used. I think Burton/Shenkmen football practice facility was in budget and also no tax dollars used either .

i heard that the ncaa wont let us build it becuase of our apr

Actually, I heard that they will let us build it. However, once the project is completed, we will have to wait 2 years to actually use it so that they can process the data on the building occupancy permit.;)

I was never really that big of a Hathaway detractor... but I was never really happy with him either... that being said it's pretty amazing how quickly all this stuff is getting moving once he was removed. I think it's pretty clear now that he was a pretty big impediment to the athletic department.

He still is- he is working with the NCAA. I did not think I could like him less- but I do.

Pe-Toowey!!!! I spit on him.

Tax dollars paid for the majority of both complexes.

Yep.

The two football buildings cost $48 million to construct, and taxpayers paid $31 million from the 21st Century UConn construction program - meaning more than 60 percent of the total.
Burton and Shenkman each initially contributed $2.5 million each and got their names on the buildings - within walking distance of Gampel Pavilion and across the street from the old football stadium. The buildings were projected to cost $40 million when UConn officials were talking about them in 2004, but the total eventually increased to $48 million by the time the doors opened.

I didn't realize that. Still it seems like an approprate use of dedicated funds.
