Probably because behavioral expectations are not typical and that want kids able to deal with it. 
Why you ask would a non LDS want to go there . According to non LDS attendees

A degree from their carries significant prestige 
Compared to other privates is inexpensive 
A caviet 
you have to have a pretty strong willed to resist conversion 
If a pretty girl want to go out it’s okay if she wants you to go to temple your being worked on . 
 
Sounds like any Catholic college  60 years ago .  Now you know more about BYU than you ever suspected.
