Val is probably gonna fine him for his potty mouth. No wonder why he won't recruit high school players. Those young kids wouldn't be able to handle his language.
“In some respects, [the portal] makes my job easier, in some respects, it doesn’t,” Pitino said at Big East Media Day. “I probably will never go to a young man’s home again. We just go straight to the negotiating table at St. John’s.”

It’s sorta refreshing to hear a coach by so candid about how he recruits in this era. But man do I hate to hear the lack of connection involved with recruiting now. Wish there was some kind of middle ground. No wonder why he won't recruit high school players. Those young kids wouldn't be able to handle his language.

I'm guessing your coach wasn't one of the greatest basketball coaches ever. These kids fall for it? When I was in college my coach talked like this and all I thought was, “He’s using reverse psychology and he’s insinuating my parents did a bad job”. It totally pissed me off. I liked a coach that attacked my ability, not my mind. That was a challenge I wanted to meet.
He already pretty much abandoned recruiting for free agency. He basically only plays 6 players and they're from UMass, Seton Hall, Kansas, Utah, North Texas and Wilcher originally committed to UNC.It’s sorta refreshing to hear a coach by so candid about how he recruits in this era. Yeah. Not saying that. I’m pretty much saying I preferred a coach that told me I was slow, dumb, lazy or not good enough to one that questioned how I was raised. My coach was a prack. You would have made the pros if you approached your coach's motivation correctly.
Does make you wonder on the right recruiting strategy. I’ve brought this up in the past referencing Dukes model this year, but the whole “continuity” development angle sounds nice but kids don’t want to wait around anymore. You have to recruit kids ranked high enough to be able to at least contribute off the bench year one (like a Pettiford), that feel like they can start year two. The age of the kid willing to ride pine for 2-3 years to develop and get significant time is expiring by the year.No wonder why he won't recruit high school players. Those young kids wouldn't be able to handle his language.

Let it play out. A huge part of this years team had both feet out at this time last year. Things can change. For better or worse.Does make you wonder on the right recruiting strategy. Reading the tea leaves of Hurley’s presser today it sounds like multiple players have their “foot out the door” (we can all guess who and could be up to 4 players by my guesstimate). I had a personal interaction with one parent who had some less than positive body language talking about it. Kids these days want instant reward, don’t have patience.
It’s a nice idea to find kids with great parents that hold kids accountable but they also want their kids to play sooner rather than later.
The saddest part of that presser was Dan Hurley talking about how kids don’t know how to communicate and rally in person and save it for text and DMs. Weird times, but adapt or die.
It’s starting to feel like Hurley may in fact be a lot closer to mixing blue chip freshman and portal adds. This is going to be an interesting post season.
True - I’m sure a couple of those will be convinced to come back as they assess the roster and portal options. It’s as much an opportunity to fix mistakes as it as it a loss. If you look at the top teams this year, they all let kids go. In some cases kids getting big minutes.Let it play out. A huge part of this years team had both feet out at this time last year. It won’t do any good. They can’t take the ball to the rack and we need more ball handling. The roster isn’t balanced.Hurley should talk to the UConn players like that.
It's what Hurley has done since this new era started. Gaffney, Diggins, Akok, Floyd Jr. weren't nearly good enough so bye bye. He brought in Newton, Hass, Nahiem, Joey C. After the first championship all he needed was Cam because he already knew he had studs in Clingan, Newton, Castle, Karaban.Does make you wonder on the right recruiting strategy. I still think Calhoun’s philosophy of playing guys off the bench early as freshmen with solidified roles to grow in, let them take the mantle as sophomores, and then bud completely as juniors can still work in this day and age.Does make you wonder on the right recruiting strategy. That was my thought when at the end of his press conference Hurley said that the players who are disappointed with how things are going for them should put the past behind them and find the mental toughness within them to attack this part of the season and to try to add value to the team. Those players don't have it---mental toughness or the skills. It won’t do any good. They can’t take the ball to the rack and we need more ball handling. The roster isn’t balanced.
It’s more likely that much of this team has a foot out the door because they aren’t good enough. Hurley should post a “Slashers Wanted” sign outside his office.
He can't do that when it looks like we might be playing in the NIT.Begging and pleading for Hurley to start giving these freshmen solidified roles to get their feet wet so we don’t see messes like this year where the sophomore group pretty much loom like freshmen.
I’m not sure it can. We shall see. Maybe in spots, where a kid pops with some development. Otherwise you’re constantly having to manage expectations and willing to concede years. The day of the portal has changed everything. Top teams are stacking their rosters with old proven guys that have a decided advantage physically.I still think Calhoun’s philosophy of playing guys off the bench early as freshmen with solidified roles to grow in, let them take the mantle as sophomores, and then bud completely as juniors can still work in this day and age.

You can’t win every year anyways. There’s nothing wrong with having a building year with a 2nd round exit if it means you’re ready to actually compete the next year.I’m not sure it can. We shall see. To me it’s snagging top freshman, nailing the portal and sprinkling in the longer term development types to fill in. Continuity to me means two years max, and I’d look to build rosters in 2 year chunks, not 3 or 4.
Right now I see two starting spots on next years team wide open.
Look at our top 6 guys last year and how many years they were in our system:You can’t win every year anyways. There’s nothing wrong with having a building year with a 2nd round exit if it means you’re ready to actually compete the next year.
Nobody is winning 5 championships in a row.
If we don’t win out to go to the tournament, I would’ve been perfectly fine with having Nowell be the backup PG all year instead of grabbing Mahaney and Karaban staying in the draft to get Stewart, Ross, and Abraham necessary opportunity and responsibility to be primed for next year.
Taking these shortcuts in the portal does not guarantee success. It only looked easy these past two years because of our highly talented core group of players we had. I’m scared that our teams will start looking more like 2022 if we start replacing our guys with transfers and turning them into our core.
How many teams have two top 5 draft pick level talents? Last years team was not normal. A 7’2 unicorn is not walking through that door. Using that team as a formula for success will lead to disappointment.Look at our top 6 guys last yet and how many years they were in our system:
Newt - 2
Cam - 1
Steph - 1
AK - 2
Cling - 2
Hassan - 2
Continuity is overrated. We can also recruit at a much higher level now.
