These guys have done a great job for the university as a whole and UConn is a much better place thanks to them. But in the case of the PP hire, failure should not be Hathaway's orphan.
Hathaway certainly deserves the majority of the blame. But Austin and McHugh were his bosses and did not do their due diligence for an important hire. Now Austin had a lot on his plate cleaning up after Hogan, and he trusted Hathaway to do the right thing, so he was let down by one of his underlings. It happens at the big organization level.
McHugh deserves a little more scrutiny. It's been suggested - and easy to believe - he was heavily lobbying for PP along with his buddies in the Ct. Coaches Association, who wrote the now-infamous "endorsement letter." It's not unreasonable to believe that Hathaway was very easily led.
It's ironic that Steve Filippone was behind that letter. Hand High's hurry-up Oregon-style offense that buried Xavier in the second half Friday is the direct opposite of what we're stuck with. Need to find a guy with college experience running that kind of system.
As the season continues its becoming increasingly likely there's going to be a change. Manuel should make the choice, Herbst should vet it, and maybe McHugh ought to step back and let those two do their job.
