I let this one marinate a bit and I'm kind of blown away. We looked bad in Maui, really bad. Confused, the defense stunk, the offense was weird one on one stuff, and the whistles mentally broke our coaches and players out there. It looked nothing like UConn basketball we've grown accustomed to the past 22 months or so.

I knew we had top 5 talent in the county but when it looks that broken you start to question everything, or at least I do. I certainly questioned the team and what this uber talented mix of players was because the talent was so much better than the product we were seeing on the court....

Instead of being a thee-peat type of team it became a let's just try and get in the tournament team and to be a tournament team we needed to show some stuff over the Baylor, Texas, Zags gauntlet. Lose all three and this is an uber talented team that seems destined to never fit, the individual players would be so much less than the cohesive product you want to see on the court. Sometimes that just happens with a team, we've seen it as UConn fans in the past...

Win one of these games and we show a pulse...

Win two of these games (that's kind of what I expected) I thought we would somehow find a way to rebound and make this a season to be a bit excited about by scratching out 2 of these three games. Win ugly and show we're a tournament team who can build up to being a tough out later on.

Well we won all three against good competition. I wasn't expecting that and last night has the juices flowing again. That was simply beautiful last night and it shows the talent these kids have and what our coaching staff is all about. Gonzaga was desperate for a win, they've looked as good as anyone in the country and for my money Auburn and Gonzaga have looked like the two best teams.

For Samson to go down early after looking that good it could've mentally hurt us and even broken us. The opposite happened...

We were a couple missed wide open AK and Solo Ball threes away from completely dominating a really good Gonzaga team. For that to happen after the Maui train wreck is crazy to me...

We saw all the things last night that made this Husky juggernaut the past 22 months possible. We're a really good three point shooting team and we simply couldn't buy a three point shot when it looked like we could bury the Zags. We still buried them. We buried them with movement, defense, getting the rebound in traffic and Liam McNeeley just saying we're winning this game.

This win ranks up pretty high up there for me as a fan because of how the team did it and how the team looked just a couple weeks ago. Let's maybe pocket the heady talk about what they can accomplish for now but I have a feeling we may have that look again come March and the coach and players may sound the same way they did in the spring of last year. The team showed a lot last night.

Mods, put this in the game thread if it doesn't belong as it's own thread. I'm just giddy after last night and I think this win is an all-timer which we may look back on.

We were trash in Maui. Nobody could stay in front of their man (yes, even Diarra), Samson was in foul trouble 2 blinks after tipoff, our off ball defensive rotations were horrible (like, among the worst I’ve ever seen from a UConn team), we had very few people that could put the ball on the floor and make plays, and we had a horrible whistle

Now..
  1. Man to man defense: not perfect but MUCH better. Big shoutout to Solo for making huge defensive improvements
  2. Samson foul trouble: either not fouling out, or doing great things before getting in foul trouble
  3. Defensive rotations: also not perfect but much better and will keep improving
  4. Playmakers: Diarra and Liam have taken this role very well
  5. Horrible whistle: who would have thought we would do better if we don’t get outshot 2:1 on FTs?
Best part is that #1 and #3 are still very easily improvable with time/coaching, and #4 can improve even more if Liam keeps developing
