Really not sure why any program hires any player or even assistant coach straight out of the NBA. Does it ever work? It’s two different sports. I’ll be curious to see what Kevin Young does at BYU.

Good to see this level of dysfunction over there a couple months away from our Maui matchup.

He wasn't hired straight out of the NBA. He was hired because he coached AAU for all the top players in the Memphis area and they knew he would get those recruits. He's also a legend down there. He's awful and they should've hired a real coach but that was the reasoning.

Alternatively, rumors of brand new AD potentially cleaning house athletic department wide, academic shenanigans, etc. Memphis State, to rebranded Memphis, same same ??? Penny saved for last year of contract to possibly save some players ??? Time may tell …

He might beat the squid on coaches who have done less with more. Can’t believe he still has a job…
Penny has only 2 appearances in the tournament since he’s been hired while having rosters that should have produced better results.
Izzo and Squid have had consistent talent and they have both the bed. Carolina and Duke each have a Final Four appearance in the last 5 years.

Not sure I’d consider AAU ball a primer for a college HC job.

Has any former NBA player, particularly a star, been even a decent college HC? They’re usually train wrecks.

Even Hardaway's kid, Ashton, must not think much of Dad's coaching. After being a bit player at Memphis last season, he is now a soph at St. Mary's.

Memphis also acknowledged it forwarded a letter to the NCAA laying out rules violations.

Michigan State has a leftover reputation as an overachiever based on tournaments more than a decade ago. It's really time it had the reputation as a huge underachiever.

...and that reputation as an overachiever is based on MSU regularly underperforming in the regular season with rosters loaded with top 100 recruits and then pulling it together during tourney time as a lower seed. I don't know how the MSU fanbase feels about him but the national media has been letting Izzo off the hook for awhile.

Does seem rather ridiculous since now players are getting millions of dollars. But I guess back then rules were rules.

But in the letter, it's alleged that four players were involved in the alleged academic malfeasance through a scheme where others would be paid to complete assignments for the players.

Say it ain't so! Lol

It's the same as the way the media kept Tex Schram's reputation as a great GM alive for a decade after the Cowboys had badly declined.

It feels like there are allegations of Level I recruiting violations and academic fraud and NCAA investigations and lawsuits and just about anything else you can imagine all the time. The program recently wanted to accept a young man who is now a felon after being convicted of firing a gun into a car filled with people. More recently, the program was reportedly recruiting a young man who had bounced through two schools already, the latter of which after being charged with sexual assault. And now this, with Memphis acknowledging Wednesday to Sports Illustrated that it has handed over a letter to the NCAA from an anonymous author that alleges multiple rules violations within the men's basketball program.

At Memphis? I'm shocked I tell ya. Shocked!

Headline in the next week: "The Big 12 is proud to announce the addition of Memphis (not State) University for all sports beginning in 2025. Memphis has shown a tenacious desire to win without regard to any rules. Face it... it's hard to break rules in an NIL and transfer portal world, but Memphis found numerous ways to cheat. Add in a US News ranking of 269 and we believe that Memphis is the right fit for the Big FedEx 12."

You know what Nate Oats calls recruiting a felon and 4 coaches involved in major rules violations? Tuesday.

I am amazed that Hardaway has stayed at Memphis this long. All he has to do is go to an SEC school and he never has to worry about these problems again.
