It was limited minutes for Patterson but there was no difference in her game from her freshman season. That's most likely why it was limited minutes. To me it looked like Ziebell might get some shots at being a scorer off the bench for the first few games but she'll need to have some production to maintain a role that will have limited minutes.Any thoughts on how Patterson and Ziebell looked today against BC? Ziebell came in earlier than I expected.
It has been discussed, it was deviated septum surgery in the summer.Ziebell wore a face mask. Did we know she suffered a face injury, I must have missed that. Might it have affected her game? I'm sure it takes some getting used to.
She had corrective surgery on her nose, I believe. The mask is to protect that area until it is fully healed. That is what I have read anyway.Ziebell wore a face mask. Great? Certainly good, perhaps very good considering it's the first time out. Also, we shouldn't overlook the fact that BC is a P4 school, not one of the best but P4 none the less.I tought they looked great!
Agreed on Patterson. I was hoping to see more of her.It was limited minutes for Patterson but there was no difference in her game from her freshman season. Agreed. Was simply wondering how others saw this one game, as we were discussing other players as well.My "thoughts" is that one exhibition game is too limited a
data set to form a meaningful report. Personally, I would
love both Yanna and Allie to be in Geno's roster "mix" for
many game plans. Then again, who would I leave out??
I was VERY happy to see Gandy get some playing time!
So, on to Southern Connecticut... October 27th... 1 pm!!!!!
She's been wearing the mask for awhile (at least a couple months), she's probably as used to it as she's gonna get.Last year Allie took the ball strong to the hoop a number of times.
Can't really put much insight into the first exhibition game especially since it was Ayanna's first REAL game in years and Allie still has to get used to that mask.
Maybe it was me, but it seemed that the paint seemed really congested at times. Ayanna seemed too close to the basket and didn't have any room to maneuver. When Geno has multiple Bigs out there, they have to not bunch up but give each player room to do their job.It was limited minutes for Patterson but there was no difference in her game from her freshman season. She seemed to lack the same degree of bounce and athleticism that she showed prior to being injured. I don't know if that's rust, lack of opportunity to showcase her athleticism, or whether she's not 100% back. Hopefully she'll get plenty of opportunities to plan an improve. Given where she is on the depth chart that means that Connecticut will need to be winning comfortably.Allie was fine but Patterson has missed SO much game time it's going to be a while before she's anywhere near top form. Healthy is one thing but being out of action for so long is a real issue.
Gee Oldhusky we saw things a bit differently. To my eyes, Allie looks to be in far better condition than last year, she has shed a lot of her baby pudge, moved quicker and was not at all hesitant to take a shot. After her first wayward shot she was pretty much on target. All told I think she took a big jump from last year, while one exhibition game is hardly a measurement of what's to come, I see good things ahead for Allie.Patterson is mostly in a battle with Ice. not a good start for her, but I think she looked fully recovered physically. She had a very raw game as a freshmen and seems to lack good basketball instincts. It's a shame because she has quite a bit more upside than Ice IMO, but needs way more developed skills, and better decision making.
Ayanna's freshmen numbers were not encouraging, but I suspect she was injured for much of the season. After a few games she looked pretty good but her numbers tailed off badly after that, so I am hoping that her first year was not indicative of her true ability, and that she may be way more healthy now then she was then.
As for Allie, we know she can shoot, but hasn't shown herself to be very good at other areas of the game. She looks a little slow to me defending smaller guards which has me thinking she might be viewed better as a 3 than a guard. She didn't rebound like a 3, but seems strong enough to be decent there.
Some of her HS highlights showed her taking the ball strong to the hoop and finishing thru contact, and since some are concerned with our 3pt shooting, Allie some at the 3 might help that. Overall though I think both Ash and Blanca are way ahead of her at that position.
Right now it looks like an uphill battle for both to get in the rotation. Possible but not probable,
Her "top form" remains speculative as it has been limited throughout her UC career by this and that. Turning her physical talent into "form" will be a challenge for her to find and exploit her niche spot / contribution in a depth chart that has other aspirants such as the currently limited but multi-talented Morgan Chelli. She needs some time and space to figure things out and placing high expectations on her at this point in time may not be helpfulAllie was fine but Patterson has missed SO much game time it's going to be a while before she's anywhere near top form. Couldn't agree more. Basketball has become dominated by physical assets / athleticism that is not necessarily accompanied by-craft skill, particularly on the mens side (of course, the truly gifted have both). Would be best if you could learn your craft-skill first (initially lacking athleticism) and then suddenly be imbued with athleticism (but it doesn't work that way - LOL). European basketball arguably emphasizes individual and team skill first over athleticism, but then our athletes often edge them out, anyway. Sarah Strong seems to have been born with both. Sarah is arguably at or beyond A. Boston level and pointing towards N. Collier, A Wilson level. Blanca needs some more work on craft-skills and then, look out, she is almost there.Yana Patterson is a very athletic individual that plays basketball. but she is not a basketball player that is athletic
