The CAA tourney coming to a George Mason near you.

soooo, did the BE bball schools tell them something or do they know the a10 is going to get ripped apart soon. something spooked them. they could go from no $$ to a actual tv contract and they passed. SPLIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First off, how much money difference are we talking about? If it is small-time differences in money, why would they join in on the game of musical chairs? Especially since their chances of winning the automatic bid to the tourney just got slightly better with the CAA departures. The money they would make from a perennial first round (and maybe second round) of an NCAA tournament might earn them more money than the move to the A-10.

All of these disaster scenarios from the Big East are depressing and scary, but when it comes right down to it, the root is always money. There is no way that someone can tell me that the Georgetowns and Villanovas of the world are going to make anywhere near the same amount of money in the A-10 than they would in the new contract of the Big East. Not even close. So why would they do it??? If it doesn't make sense, it ain't true. They are waiting to see what happens with the football schools, and then they will decide...

ok i hear you, heres my thoughts. with the caa losing the other schools that matter somewhat, yes GM would have a clear shot at being the autobid most years. so if the league is 1 bid a year which it may go back to being now then w/e $$ they make from the ncaa it gets split among all teams in the league. i'm not sure how big of a payout GM really gets. i think its like 2mil per team so after that is split up among all teams in the new caa its not much. the caa doesn't have much of a tv contract i would asume. GM most likely gets some of its games on tv thru tier 3 somewhere down there.

if they moved to the a10 i see this. the a10 will be a 3-5 bid league. is that safe to asume? i think the past couple years the a10 has really done well for itself and even though they are losing temple who was one of its gems, they are adding several quality programs. the a10 has some type of tv deal i think. w/e that $$ number is, thats a bump from the caa. GM can still have those local tier 3 games i would think. also the league getting multiple bids a year would mean more ncaa $$ to be split up among the league. i see the a10 as a better $$ draw for GM as well as just being a better league all around(schools brand names/recruiting etc...).

so if the $$ is what i think it is(better than caa) why wouldn't they go? the caa is falling apart becuase of fball and which ways those schools are upgrading or not. i can't help but think that GM knows something or feels something is going to happen. for example, a couple years from now the be bball schools split and they take 4 or more of the top schools from the a10(butler/xavier/stl/....). then what the a10 is down to isn't much. GM may know that they won't be one of those schools picked(maybe they will get blocked by a school?) and they feel that whats left over after that in the a10 isn't any better than there current home in the caa. so they stay becuase the $$ for 1 or 2 years isn't worth it in the long run.

The difference in NCAA units between the A10 and the CAA is going to be huge going forward. For these second tier leagues, that alone is worth leaving. Unless VCU and ODU are staying too, this will turn out to be a mistake for George Mason. Good. Screw them.

thats a good point nelson. screw them. i don't want it to seem like i'm a GM fan in any way. they ruined my spring one year as many of you know. i hope they stay in the caa and the kid @ pitt who calls in bomb threats every day transfers to there campus. :D

Let's be real. UConn ruined your spring. Mason just happened to be the recipient of a gift wrapped regional final.

Seems like a bad move. Though I would agree they're probably worried that the A10 will be losing some of its better teams to the BE in the future.

With +Butler & -Temple & -Charlotte, A10 now has 13. Still room for VCU.

Costs VCU a lot more to move as they forfeit a ton of NCAA money if they leave. Plus they no longer get to play the conf tourney down the street from their campus.

True. Had forgotten about that.

A10 may hold at 13 for a year or so, waiting to see if other things shake out.
