Parkland Shooting Victim's Family Starts UConn Scholarship In His Memory

A Parkland, Fla. family has decided to start a UConn scholarship in memory of their 14-year-old son who was killed in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February.

Alex Schachter, who often wore a UConn sweatshirt, had his heart set on attending the university and playing the trombone in its marching band.

Max Schachter and his wife, Caryn DeSacia, hope to keep Alex’s memory alive with a scholarship, which will be awarded each year to a student who, like Alex, grew up wanting to play in the UConn marching band.

“After this horrible tragedy, we just wanted to try to have something good come of this,” Max Schachter said in a statement released by UConn. “We’re hoping that it will keep Alex’s memory alive for years and years to come.”

Shortly after the Feb. 14 massacre, in which 17 people were killed, UConn learned that Schachter had dreamed of attending the school and offered Alex admission posthumously.

It was a gesture that moved the family. “It just meant so much to us ...” Max Schachter said. “It definitely put a bright spot in our hearts amongst all the sadness.”
