Work Expands to fill the time available for its completion.

How is this possible? I'm retired. Basically, I've got nothing to do, yet...

Since I retired and have a lot of time, I am able to fully analyze potential tasks. And I have discovered a new law regarding work and time. It is uncanny, but without fail my analysis leads me to believe that tomorrow is always the more auspicious starting point. I think it is a brilliant breakthrough, but my wife has a different view of its efficacy. I was going to show her the data on a spreadsheet to prove my point, but it just wasn't a good day to start a Powerpoint presentation. She mentioned something about a self -fulfilling prophecy. I am going to research it some day soon. ;)

" . . . . . tomorrow is always the more auspicious starting point."

I have lived my post retirement life (20+ years) with that as a goal. Unfortunately, I think I am busier and work harder now than I ever did when employed. However, now I'm working hard at doing the things I want to do.

Bama, I believe you are in the Alabama section of the Procrastinator's Club. I will notify you if and when we are able to have a quorum.

Yup. Work is not all it’s cracked up to be. Did you know that if you stare long enough, you can actually watch grass grow.

As I age, I've come to recognize how precious each opportunity for procrastination is, thus I must not waste a single one of them on superficial activity. Contemplation is often better than ... well... most everything.

Hemingway, in his literary memoir, A Moveable Feast, is the source of a favorite five word quotation: "Don't confuse motion with action."

Since retirement I've come realized that Mark Twain was correct. "Whenever I feel the urge to exercise I lie down until the feeling goes away". At my age I've found that it's not procrastination that I've grown to love but the anticipation of waiting that juices me.

Are you a closet omphaloskeptic? If so I apologize for "outing" you.

It has been said that in Alabama procrastination is firmly rooted in the collective psyche of the population. When I first moved to Alabama from the North, Bear Bryant had died and he was deeply mourned. The running joke then was "How many Bama fans does it take to change a light bulb? Five, one to change the bulb, and four to talk about how great the old bulb was." Resistance to change is not a bug, but a feature here. I feel that I have not succumbed to indolence as much as I have acquiesced to the Weltanschauung extant. ;)

I am reminded of a summer I once spent working in TN with a NC native. One day at lunch I could barely move in the heat (the far side of the street looked like a shimmering mirage) and my friend with a sh_t eating grin commented 'This is what I love about the South; it is impossible to move fast in this weather!' It was a revelation into his always calm demeanor. :)

With apologies to Mark Twain for a slight alteration in his quote:
'I am pushing 66. That is enough exercise for me!'

And another unattributed: 'Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional!'
