Don't know how it matters on Oklahoma game, but maybe practice.
Nothing against Watkins, simply magnificent as a player and a person, but the best player in this tournament has always been UConn’s Paige Bueckers. She’s a better shooter than anyone in the women’s game — including Caitlin Clark — and comprehensively more watchable than so many NBA players trapped inside the tedious 3-point obsession.
Clark remains the face of the women’s game, with so much more to come, and if you want to match her long-range mastery, you might stop after Stephen Curry. But Clark admittedly needs some work on her mid-range shots, floaters and left-handed drives. Hall of Fame analyst Rebecca Lobo noted on ESPN that as Bueckers made 14 shots (out of 21) against South Dakota State in the second round, “they all came in a different fashion. She was absolutely unguardable.”
Bueckers has a knack for stop-and-start threading through a swarm of defenders, pulling up in an instant to shoot off the dribble, or driving hard with either hand. Leave her open, and it’s straight cash. She could score 40 points any night, against anyone, but she has an admirably generous streak that allows her very capable teammates — notably Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong — to thrive.
Proud to see my (new) hometown paper call it like it is. JuJu wows more on a play by play (and especially one on one) basis, and I think she'll probably have the best pro career of all the top college players right now, but Paige is unquestionably the best player in WCBB. Truly - what can't she do? And has anyone had her utilization and yet maintained 50/40/90?! I think not. I really hope UConn gets a natty this year, because (among other reasons) it would be a karmic injustice for her to graduate and not have a championship. Not sure where to share this, but a piece appeared in today's San Francisco Chronicle that discusses Paige and the Huskies. Tried to share a gift link, but I guess I ran out of them for the month...at any rate... Here's an excerpt and the link:
Why not even JuJu Watkins’ injury could bring down women’s March Madness
