Well … Boston’s scoring fell a half point and her FG percentage dipped from 58 to 53 in year two. So not really. Giving Clark credit for a “career year” for someone in their second season, when the sample size is 2, is a little silly to begin with, but the stats don’t even reflect that. Mitchell’s scoring did go up a point from 18.2 to 19.2 and FG percentage improved from 44 to 47 … so you could fairly say it was a career year for scoring efficiency (and it’s fair to say CC had something to do with that, drawing attention and getting her better looks). But Mitchell also became very one dimensional. Her assists dipped under 2 (from 3.1 to 1.8) for the only time in her career and her A-to-TO ratio was a career-worst 1.1. In 2022 (when the Fever admittedly stunk) she averaged 18.4 points on 43 percent shooting with 4.2 assists and a 1.8 assist to turnover ratio. That’s arguably a better individual season than 19.2, 47 pct, 1.8 assists and a 1.1 ratio. Meanwhile this year with CC out, Mitchell has almost doubled her assists back up to 3.4 - greatly improved her A:TO ratio to 1.9 - and her scoring has also gone up to 20.2. She’s having her career year this year without Clark. She’s likely first team all W. We saw this same phenomenon at Iowa with the disrespect for Monika Czinano - who scored 2500 career points and shot 68 percent in every year she started (even the year before CC got there). But the narrative now is that she’s just one of those randos who was carried, instead of the closest thing to an automatic bucket that college hoops has seen this century.
