Not surprisingly, for the 2nd month in a row, Paige Bueckers leads all NCAA female athletes in merchandise sales on Campus Ink’s website. For anyone who’s attended a UConn WBB game in the past season and seen thousands of young girls and some boys decked out in #5 UConn jerseys. Be prepared. This season, most UConn home games at Gampel or XL will be a virtual “whiteout” or “blue out” of #5 jerseys. ;)

It will be interesting to see how many PB jerseys are seen worn by kids at road games. I’m interested in the growth of the game. ( it’s great that Gambell sold out for season tickets) I have little doubt that tv viewership among the “ fad fans”will drop in the post-Clark season, but I hope that national attendance will improve as new, true fans of wbb have been added for all fanbases.

Paige, Juju, Hannah, and Milaysia give me hope that viewership will not drop much. Paige will have great following among the “new”” national fanbase of wbb.

Good question. Maybe we can get someone to count up all the Paige Bueckers jerseys when the Huskies visit Columbia this season. ;)

I’m prejudiced of course. This goes without saying. But I think the recent growth of interest in WBB is a thing that started with Paige in high school. She was much more a national phenomenon than Caitlin was then and this extended through her freshman year at Storrs. But the injuries took Paige off the stage for the better part of two years, and interest in Caitlin surged as her own on-court heroics expanded in that same time. In effect, Paige “set the stage” for Caitlin.

And just to be clear, Caitlin did great things over the past three years, including carrying Iowa to two NC games and setting various records. It’s an impressive résumé that Paige is not likely to eclipse even with an NC this year. And yet, Paige’s off-court presence in the broader culture may already be greater than Caitlin’s, and barring any injuries to either of them it is likely to become even greater once they’re both in the W. This is the peculiar relationship between two great players who will always be measured against one another.

:D:D I doubt there will be many since most kids attending our games will be wearing the jerseys of hometown gal, Fulwiley, but if UConn moms and dads buy their daughters some of the few remaining tickets, we might see some.

To use a couple of overused words, I consider that there is a pair of present “generational GOATs” in Stewie and A’ja.

The next generational paring of goats could well be Caitlin and Paige. The book is still being written though and I won’t give them the title until about the seventh year as pros

I'd agree. Paige was a bigger star media wise in HS than anybody else. One of her highlight reels from HS has 100K views. Present time, she made it onto Vogue, she's reposted by major sports leagues, works out with NBA stars, and she's seen everywhere in the country. Her social media presence is huge compared to anybody else in the world of WBB.

Indeed. But we're not talking about who the great players are right now. We're talking about who's had a greater social impact on the viewership of the game. I think even now Caitlin and Paige, despite having accomplished comparatively little, have had a greater impact than Stewie and A'ja, even considering their greatness on the court. It's hard to dispute this, I think. The whole world knows who Paige and Caitlin are, but few outside of WBB fans know Stewie and A'ja.

And don't worry, I know how to distinguish the real fans from the ones attracted to a current novelty. The latter will fade away, but the number of real fans will also have grown in the meantime.

I have clients who probably fit into the”new” or ”fab” fan. Average people who watched their kids participating through 12th grade but didn’t participate in athletics during college.

Just average sports fan’s who all of a sudden were hearing about CC, tuned in to see what the noise was about. And for the most part. . . Got it.

I’ve watched some wnba this pass season because I had a grandson who was losing his mind over CC had to have her jersey 22, and I needed to be able to have a conversation with him when he wanted to talk about a game. Thank goodness she doesn’t have a shoe.

I guess by the current definition I’m not a “true” wbb fan. I’m totally okay with that.

Several years ago I come across a wbb game, while looking for something to watch. Damn but I was impressed, these girls were passing to where the recipient would be, not where they were. Knocking down their shots. Running the floor, setting screens, executing the game as I understood it was meant to be played.

As time went by I became more competent in finding this team on TV. For several years now the schedule appears on my calendar, majic. I buy streaming packages so I can get SNY living in Indiana.

When a kid graduates that I really like I will check in to see how they are doing but I no longer watch as they pursue their professional career. As an adult.

I guess I’m an odd ball. I happen to like the structure that’s been built for young women to develop skills that not only should help them be amazing players of the game but should carry them very well for the rest of their adult lives.

Label me however you like. I couldn’t care less. And I’ll follow up by saying if I ever watch another wnba game again it will be too soon. At the same time I’m stressing whether or not the game on November 3rd at 12:00 noon will be on TV or not. If I have to listen on the radio I will but would really like to see the kids.

You might want to throw Napheesa Collier into that mix. She has come on like gangbusters, improving every part of her game.

If you watched Wbb befor Caitlin’s junior season, you are not a new or “fad” fan. You are a true fan who is destined to continue watching

The first WBB player I remember being 'a fad' was Skylar Diggins (Smith) - she had an exploding OL presence that seemed more interested in her than her team and WBB in general, and she was the first star that I remember who chose not to play overseas as she wanted to continue to build her brand here in the US.

I suspect there will be some loss of viewership and attendance this year but I suspect it will be better than two years ago as some of the maniacs will have gotten hooked on what is a really good product.

Overused is an understatement. Somehow a few years ago The Greatest Of All Time, which implies a singular player, devolved into a sort of an Oprah HOF. Everybody gets votes. Now there can be 10-20 at any given time and they can change every 5 years or so. And generations now last about 3 years. ;)

If Paige wins a NC this year she would eclipse CC in Final Four appearances, 3 out 3, a National Championship, a National Championship game and a Final Four game. She also did something that CC didn't even come close to doing as well as anyone else. That is be the only Freshman in Women's College Basketball to win the AP, Naismith, USBWA National Player of the Year Awards and the John R. Wooded award.

Ahhh, the ghost of Caitlin Clark looms on the minds of Boneyarders everywhere...;)

How about we stick with Paige and her '24-25 competition? I'd love to see Paige win, in effect, bookend NPOY awards, and this time bring home a national title!

I think the CC fans hang around and ncaa women will have a record year for interest.

Paige and JuJu are equally exciting players, Azzi too if she returns smoothly. Hidalgo/Miles also quite promising.

Plus we have OldDude's super teams. Title contenders now go 8 deep, with upset threats all thru top 16.

It's a great era right now for WCBB!

I look forward to your unbiased report of the relative number of 5s versus 12s on the day.

As a fan of good basketball the growth brought by CC is based on her skills outside of shooting the ball. She has a charisma that simply hasn't been present before in the womens game and quite frankly is very reminicent of when Jordan came into the men's game. Paige is a great player and I think she will build a following of her own but the excitement for Clark isn't going anywhere unless the WNBA continues to let players maul those they can't guard otherwise. I do think as the league increases quality players like Paige, CC and JuJu the games will have to be called better and better leadership in the W will see that it happens.
