The Pac12 went from Stanford domination for a decade or more to a very competitive conference. Washington, Oregon State, Cal, and Stanford made the Final Four in the past few years. UCLA and Oregon both made it to the Bridgeport Regionals. ASU usually fields a competitive team.

Isn't is amazing how well this conference has done in a relatively short period of time? They have more good-to-great schools than almost anyone, with exciting stars and great league play.
I think part of it is due to upgraded young coaches.

Players like Wiese, Plum and Samuelson will be missed, obviously in terms of talent but also their personalities. It will be interesting to see who emerges during the media day as the new faces of the conference this season. Among the players filling the void I would probably bet on Canada from UCLA and Ionescu from Oregon.

A couple of former UConn players were chosen as representatives for their current schools to appear in the Pac 12 studios--Sadie Edwards and Courtney Ekmark.

UCLA preseason pick for #1 with Oregon and Stanford tied for 2nd.

UCLA Women's Basketball tops Preseason Poll

2017-18 PAC-12 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACHES’ POLL

Team (First Place) Points
1 UCLA (7) 115
T2. Oregon (3) 108
T2. Stanford (2) 108
4 Oregon State 85
5 California 83
6 Arizona State 74
7 Washington State 61
8 USC 47
9 Utah 40
10 Colorado 38
11 Arizona 20
12 Washington 13

Pretty solid picks (and very close to my predictions, so of course I think so).
  • This is a put-up-or-shut-up year for Cal. It's Anigwe's junior year, and they lost only one major contributor from last year (Courtney Range).

  • ASU has quality and depth at guard but lost its entire frontcourt (Brunner, Dornstauder, Moos). How quickly their new forwards and posts can get up to speed will determine how far they can go.

  • Look for Washington State to have its best team in recent memory. Last year saw them lose their best three players (Hristova, Brown, Molina) to season-ending injuries, and they still made it all the way to the WNIT semifinals. All three of those players are back, and they only lost one significant player to graduation.

  • USC is the toughest one to predict. How well will the players adapt to Trakh's coaching style and system? The major factor IMO will be Kristen Simon. If she can give a consistent effort and play near her potential, the Trojans can beat some good teams. Last year she was very up and down, and the team's results reflected that.

So ... one interesting fact that the interviewers brought up is that Courtney Ekmark has finished her undergrad and is now in law school.

Got her Bachelor's degree in 3 years. Nice! We knew she was a top student.
