Other big games? Hmmm. Final four against Stanford when she outrebounded Brink. Earlier that same season against Tennessee when she dismantled the LVols in the 3rd quarter — it’s really worth watching this game again. These were huge games and she stepped up in the role she was given. Don’t make the newbie mistake of merely looking at a stat line. There’s always been much more to Nika’s game than a stat line can capture. The following season, huge games against Tennessee and SC, now leading a depleted lineup. Yes, UConn eventually lost to tOSU in the sweet sixteen. But it would be odd to think they could have gotten even that far without Nika. And that loss to SC in which she fouled out in the final seconds in order stop the clock after a preposterous missed call practically stole the game from UConn — she nearly engineered an upset of #1 with a lineup of 6 players and only one perimeter shooting threat. And about that tOSU loss in which she struggled, bear in mind that UConn had only one ball handler + Azzi still gimpy and Lou who’d just tweaked her knee. You can blame Nika but I’m willing to admit that she was the primary target of an excellent pressing team. I’d say about that game, it was as far as Nika could lead them as they were constituted at that moment. The following season, her stats declined mainly because Paige came back and took over the team. And she had to share more of her now reduced role with KK and Ash. And yes, Nika had more of the costly fouls many people focus on. But she also had great games in the tournament against Duke and USC. She was less effective in the loss to ND, perhaps her weakest outing of this season. So, yes, Nika’s had good games and bad games, and she’s been foul prone in ways that have occasionally cost the team. But the big picture is overwhelmingly positive. And she has absolutely stepped up big in some of the biggest games.
