  • Laura Ferreira did her best Laksa impersonation: career highs of 34 points and 8 three-pointers, to help USF beat Oklahoma 87-70. I'm actually a bit shocked by this result. Apparently it was a fairly close game until 4Q, when USF outscored OU 29-16. USF also got big contributions from Alyssa Rader (16 pts) and two freshmen, Beatriz Jordao (13 pts) and Sydni Harvey (16 pts).

  • Georgia Tech handed #14 Georgia its second straight loss to an unranked team (UCLA beat them the other day). GT moves to 3-1, with its only loss coming in 2OT to Houston.

  • Northwestern came back from an 11-point deficit with 3:14 to play, and then outscored Florida 24-4 in the last 8 minutes of play to win in OT. Florida falls to 0-4; Northwestern stays undefeated at 4-0.

  • UCF moves to 3-0 with a dominant 76-42 win at Mercer. Looking forward to UCF's next game at Central Michigan, a Sweet 16 team from last year.

  • LSU, fresh off a home loss to Tulane, went on the road to beat Florida State, 58-45, behind the strength of a 22-0 (!) second quarter.

  • Duke may have steadied the ship momentarily, with an 81-64 win over Elon.
  • Colorado is currently up by 18 over North Carolina in 4Q.
  • Boston College hung on to beat Houston, 64-57.
  • Miami at Iowa State for the preseason WNIT championship is just underway (on CBS Sports Network).

Mississippi State just dismantled a terrible Coppin State team 110-38. Teaira was solid with 23 and freshman Jessika Carter had 16p/8r/5b. She is going to be very good for Vic. AEH had 16pts on 6-9 shooting (4-6 from 3) along with 3r and 3a.

Bibby and Espinoza-Hunter give MSST some solid three-point threats. Make them much more dangerous.

The Cyclones are blowing away the Hurricanes late in the 4th quarter  That wasnt on my radar
Iowa State is much improved over last year. They return Bridget Carleton, by far their best player, and add transfer Middleton and a strong recruiting class. Mompremier got in foul trouble early and Miami never recovered.

Some other interesting results:
  • Tulane beats Washington, 63-51, its second consecutive win over a P5 team (after beating LSU the other day).
  • TCU survives an upset bid from local rival SMU, 65-63. SMU missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final possession.
  • Louisiana Tech: AAC killer? After beating Houston in OT the other day, they beat Memphis by 16 today.
  • Cincinnati eked out a 1-point win over (future UConn opponent) Saint Louis, which missed the potential game-winner at the buzzer.
  • Washington State resumes its struggles, with a 13-point home loss to UC Davis.

Oregon over Buffalo 102-82. A very unsatisfying game in many ways: the refs were terrible and for much of the game made it impossible for there to be any continuity for either team. Ionescu almost had a quadruple double (points, rebounds, assists, turnovers--12, 10, 10, 7); she couldn't buy a shot from the field (1-7) and had what seemed to be an unending number of traveling calls in the first half, not something that's usual for her. But still.

Buffalo remains a tough out after last year's run, and Ciera Dillard is a handful, although she shot only 10-24. The rest of the Ducks starters played well (all in double figures, led by Hebard and Sabally with 25 and 20 respectively) and Graves seems to be intent on developing the bench, such as it is, and for a fair amount of time played only one starter (Ionescu or Cazorla) + 4 players who hadn't played or seen any real time at all last year. The team is clearly a work in progress.

I think the Cougs are gonna be BAD this year. Maybe bad enough to take over the cellar in the Pac 12. I had hopes UW would show some marked improvement. Tulane may be fairly good, certainly the win over LSU was eye opening. It was UW's first road game of the season but a bit discouraging to see them drop a double digit loss. I thought they might have a chance against a struggling Duke team, but not really feeling it now.

I was at the game. Sabrina clearly had an off night shooting the ball. But when Oregon broke the game open in the third quarter with scoring from Hebard, Cazorla and Sabally it was all facilitated by Ionescu assists.

I agree that Graves is still working to get his limited bench as much experience as possible before they head into conference play.

They have a few big tests ahead of them in non conference. First, a Midwest trip to Michigan St. and South Dakota St. and then a visit from Mississippi St. after that we will know more about this team.
