Y.A. was a favorite of mine as well. He had a fairly lengthy but unspectacular career, mostly with the 49ers, before joining the Giants in 1961 around the age of 35 after Charlie Conerly retired. His best years were 1962 and 1963, with a total of 69 touchdown passes, favorite targets Shofner and Gifford.
The games were on Channel 3, with Chris Schenkel announcing.
The picture of him on his knees with helmet off is a very sad one, kind of a symbol for Father Time being undefeated. It occurred in 1964, when the Giants team just seemed to collapse. Age caught up to a lot of them, Huff and Modzelewski were traded, and it was all very troubling to this 12 year old fan.
I will remember Y.A. as the star who I saw on black and white tv throw 7 touchdowns against the Redskins, not the battered guy kneeling on the turf.
