I understand that there are a number of different Putcomes that can lead to teams going to Brazil in 2014. In a nutshell what has to happen for the US to advance ... How many teams get to advance from the north america group. I see that the US already lost to Hondurus and appear to be in last place. Should we expect them to be in Brazil 2014 or not?

The top 3 teams automatically advance. The 4th ranked team then plays a play-in game ( or it may be a home and home series) against a team from I believe the Australian area. The winner of this game or series also goes to Brazil.

Top three of the six get qualify. The 4th place team has to beat a team from Oceania.

Win the 5 home games should get it done. A tie in the opener would have made it much easier.

This team as is makes me nervous they'll drop a home game and make it a squeaker.

It was only the 1st game of a 10-game competition. They are the 2nd best team so they should make it. But it's soccer so stuff happens.

"Stuff" happens a lot less in soccer than it does in many other sports. And it pains me to say it, but the US hasn't been playing like the second best team in CONCACAF for almost a year now. Klinsmann hasn't found the right eleven yet, and he's running out of time. The next couple of games in The Hexagonal are crucial for us to establish an identity as a team. I still have faith that we'll find our way into the top three, but the form has to get better than what it is currently...

I'm not concerned about not making it to Brazil, but if we don't figure out how to fix the defense we're going to look like a bunch of clowns when we get there...

And what's going on with Donovan? All I see here in Germany is that he's unsure of his desire to play at the international level? Can anyone fill me min on this?

Donovan decided that he doesn't know if he wants to play any more. He's taken an indefinite sabatical. There is some speculation that he may be back for the Cup if we make it that far.

He'll be back. But good grief. He is soft.

I'll take a soft guy like Donovan on my team any day. Same guy that took every corner as a p/t player for Everton and takes all of our PK's. When a guy who's been a leader on the nat team takes time off he's usually worn out or has issues with the coach or both. So what if he's not as physical as Dempsey he provided one of the few real threats we have on the international level. I'd rather have a US guy in there anyway.

Supposedly Donovan will be on his way back, but after our first game vs. Mexico.

FWIW, Australia switched to the Asian Federation. SubbaBub's correct, the CONCACAF 4th-ranked team plays a play-in game against a team from the Oceania Federation.

Imagine if he did that here, Wisky? They would whistle him out of Germany...

They whistled him out of Germany once already. He missed his sister and his SoCal playground. His toughness is what kept him from being a real player globally.

We need more Dempseys and less Donovans. This isn't the first time he stayed in the minivan and ate Mommy's orange slices instead of being on the field where he is needed.

He should be playing full time in a European side. He has the capability to get the minutes in a European league. If a player in Europe pulled this, he would be pilloried.
