Bolt is still the best sprinter in history. Possibly the greatest track athlete. Edwin Moses, undefeated in the 400 hurdles for several years, would be in the discussion. I'm not as familiar with the middle-distance races, but I don't remember there being a really dominant 1500, 5000, or 10000 runner.

Mo Farah has had a pretty good stranglehold recently.

I am an unabashed fan of Usain Bolt :)

I would've been okay with him losing to Coleman but not Gatlin. Gatlin can, to put it politely, jump up his own digestive tract.

Bolt is definitely among the best track and field athletes of all time and Mo Farah is also in the same category although Mo hasn't set world records but races longer than 800 meters tend to be more strategic than sprints. (Emil Zatopek is another all-time great who is the only athlete to win the 5,000, the 10,000, and the marathon in the same Olympics.)

Usain Bolt's start was .045 slower then Gatlin, yet lost the race by .03 seconds. Another couple of yard, Bolt probably wins. Obviously a better start and he also wins.

Doh! I just saw the 10000 a couple of nights ago. He gave a great interview after the race, I'll miss him when he retires.

The brain is a wonderful thing, I gotta start using mine.

Bolt gave us a whole new dimension of "Man, he smoked that!" I'll miss him on the track.

Great seeing not only 1, but 2 Americans beat him. Can't overlook Coleman who also beat him. It was great seeing Gatlin silence the crowd who booed him and then honor Bolt with a bow and give him props after the race.

Moses won gold in 1976 and 1984. We boycotted in 1980, when he surely would have won. At age 33, he won bronze in 1988. He also won gold in 3 world cups, 2 world championships, and 1 Goodwill games. He won 122 consecutive races covering just under 10 years. He was the gold standard (no pun intended) in an event where a slight misstep can cause a runner to tumble and lose.

As someone who failed drug tests twice (and continually denied doing anything wrong), Gatlin has earned those boos and then some.

Aren't there any fellow skeptics out there who wonder how a man can dominate his sport against others who are proven drug users? After all, Lance beat the drug testers all those years.

Gatlin won fair and square. Good for him.
Thank u! Nobody's perfect...fact remains that he won! CONGRATS Justin!!!
Bingo. These guys are tested constantly. Whatever Gatlin did in the past is just that - in the past. He came back from whatever he did wrong as strong as ever and beat the greatest sprinter in the history of the sport in his final race. It's a great story.

Do I wish Gatlin never had any juicing issues? Of course. But he paid the price, worked hard, came back and won fair and square. Proud of him and what he accomplished.

I'm more skeptical of the guy who has already a proven track record of cheating, twice.

came back and won fair and square

Fair and square? Are you sure?

I'm not sure that it's fair to talk about TWO failed drug tests. The first one was when he tested positive for a very common ADD prescription medication he had been taking since childhood. His initial suspension was cut dramatically, and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said: "Mr. Gatlin neither cheated nor intended to cheat".

It's harder to defend him on the second one, however, although he continues to claim he was set up.

Gaitlin deserves credit for the win and his homage to Bolt.

No shame in Bolt being carried off on his shield either.

Are you sure it wasn't? Are you on the doping board? Or the committee that reviews that stuff? I didn't think so. Neither am I!! ;)

All joking aside, I assume that since he raced, it was a legal race. I assume that he, as well as the other athletes, were tested very recently leading up to the world championships. I get if you don't like the guy for his claiming he was set up for a failed drug test, and I certainly can't argue with your opinion on that account.

But bottom line is he won, and it's clear there will be some mixed feelings about it, which i totally get...

It can take a while -- as long as eight years -- for tests to yield results. Kara Goucher just received an upgrade, from a bronze to a silver, due to an athlete have been caught cheating in a race in the 2007 World Championships. Tests done in 2015 showed the woman who initially won the silver had used banned substances.

Well, it's been nine years since the 2008 Olympics, so there's that.
