OT: Uncle Mo

Hehehehe. I just noticed below my name I am listed as the Uncle Mo of Posters. Any one on this board who knows me, knows that horse racing is my first love and I have been known for using racehorses in my usernames.

For you non-racing fans, Uncle Mo was this year's Kentucky Derby favorite, but he never ran in the race and for the rest of the year pretty much mirrored what the Lady Vols have done for the last three years.....underachieved.

I know there is one other horsey guy on this board....WaquoitBroadBrush. Waquoit beat favored Broad Brush, two very nice horses, back in '88 in the now defunct Mass Cap, Suffolk Downs premier race for many years. Seabiscuit won the Mass Cap back when only Olde Coach was alive and Cigar won it twice.

So I am very amused and honored that someone inscribed "Uncle Mo of Posters" under my name. ...thank you

I am also a horse fan. I owned horses for 30 years, competed in 3 day eventing. My daughter competed in eventing. I owned my horse for 23 years and he was 30 went he died. I miss having horses every day. I miss their smell, and the soft velvet of their noses, and the warm air they blow on your hand as you offer them a treat, the feel of their muscles and the soft coat.

I am also lucky enough to call Annie Mose my friend (for more then 20 years). I have enjoyed watching Annie and Jerry in the winners circle. They are two of the nicest people in the world. Of their three most famous horses Giacamo (2005 Kentucy Derby winner) Tiago (2004 raced in Kentucky Derby and Belmont) and of course the big girl (soon to be a momma) Zenyatta - won the most money ever by a female horse, Won the Breeders cup in 2009 and share the record for the most won consecuative races 19 in a row and lost her 20th, in 2010 she was named Horse of the Year.

So much is know about Annie and Jerry, but here is something that does not get so widely publicized. Back in the late 80's, Annie started a foundation to Save the Dolphins. It was at the urging of Annie and Jerry that StarFishTuna announced that they would begin using Dolphin Safe fishing - I believe this was in 1994 .

Back to horses, Secretariat was my all time favorite race horse. I was also entranced by your namesake - Ruffian. She was a joy to watch, and her end was heartbreaking.

I heard from a mutual friend of Annie's and mine - that the Moses have another great prospect in their barn. He would not give me any more details, so I am watching a waiting. And when I see Annie, I will be asking her about the new prospect. She is so humble she never brags. She is an angle on this earth, and I am blessed to know her.

Thank you for your post CalifHusky. I don't know where I place the great Zen on my list of fillies and mares I have seen in my 35 years of following the sport. Rachel and Go For Wand were my two favorites. I witnessed Rachel's great win in the Woodward in the clubhouse at the 1/16 pole in '09 as well as the most devastating thing I have ever seen in sports when Wand broke down in the '90 Breeders Cup and I was standing on the apron less than 100 yards from her.

My alltime male favorites are John Henry, Slew, Holy bull and Curlie (Curlin)

Regarding Zenyatta, she is the most charismatic horse I have even seen, bar none, from her Spanish walk, to her gentle nature and her imposing persona. She came from dead last in all twenty of her races and lost one by a nose

Thanks for the country ditty...that was enjoyable and made me smile.

I share your admiration for some of your favs - Slew and Curlin and Rachael....all bring back great memories.

It is heart breaking to see a horse break down on the track. Ruffian's was so bad that I could not watch the movie when it came out.

When you see the coming attractions to War Horse - that is what my horse Orpheus looked like. He was a big horse with a big heart. I am coming back to CT next Friday, to visit my daughter, the week end is planned. Arriving late Friday night. Watching the UCONN vs ND game on TV on Sat, and going to the movies on Sunday to see War Horse all the while enjoy the scenery in Newport RI. I'm hoping for a week with mild weather.

(LaserT was a horse that he had either owned or had a particular interest in.)

Cool, that Mass Cap (1987) was one of the best races of all time. Waquoit was one of the few New England horses to make a national impact. They finally have it up on You Tube, the hilarious race call is just an added bonus.

I've not seen many horse races but, I watched this one and the Ruffian race. I feel like I jinx horses.

I think you are referring to Timely Writer. Probably had some of the worst luck of any horse.

Don't get me started on those two Boston butchers (literally) and their sleazy trainer and how they killed that horse in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.....it started with his infirmity masked as colic (according to many I knew that were inside the horsey circles at the time) prior to the Derby until trying to get a less than firm horse that one signature win in the JCGC.

If I am not mistaken he is buried in the Belmont infield near Ruffian and the ill-fated Prairie Bayou.

Waquoit....I do have you mixed up with a poster on a horsey board whose handle is WaquoitBroadBrush.

IIRC TW was just a regular brown horse. Waquoit though, I do remember definitely as being gray.

And it was a helluva field with four very good horses...Waquoit, Broad Brush, Creme Fresh, and Skip Trial. Creme Fresh won the Belmont and two Jocky Club Gold Cups. Skip Trial was a very nice horse whose son Skip Away was one of the great horses of the last 50 years winning the Breeders Cup Classic as well as beating the great Cigar in the JCGC and retiring with $9.6 mil in earnings, just behind Cigar's $10 mil.
