I know a couple of people here defend him, but Dom Amore just isn't getting the job done. Not a personal attack on him but when is the last time this guy told us anything we didn't already know on twitter. When is the last time he wrote an article without a spelling mistake? Every single article has typos!! Mike Anthony reached out to recruits and gave us real updates. What exactly does Dom do other than use poor grammar and go through the motions? I hate to single out a guy on his job but it's getting ridiculous with how bad he's doing.

I'll extend this to the football coverage too.

The Courant's sports editorial staff has made a conscientious decision to de-emphasize beat reporting of UConn sports. No other explanation for the consistently bland, generic coverage.

I no longer look at the Courant for any breaking news regarding UConn sports, any analysis or inside information. The AP coverers UConn as much as the Courant.

Amore went to both skills camps to give updates on Boat/Bazz and DeAndre, which other beat writers did that?

He's employed by the Courant do you actually think he was proactive about going to the skills academy? Nursery school update by the way. If you want UConn basketball news follow a lot of us Boneyarders on Twitter. We actually stay on top of things and care

no offense, but you're out of your mind if you think anyone at the Courant had to push Amore to attend those events, they wouldn't even have a clue they were going on.

I thought Desmond was excellent when he covered hoops. But if memory serves, he was a secondary writer who did feature stories and opinion pieces, as opposed to the beat guy.

It's July 7. What do you expect him to be reporting to you? How many times can you be told that Prospect X still thinks these 4 schools are recruiting him the hardest?

Thanks for the laugh.

Dez is an absolute embarrassment on football coverage. The Courant couldn't find someone who isn't a Syracuse fanboy to coverage UConn?

I don't think Amore does a bad job at all. It's offseason and he's not a recruiting analyst, he's a beat writer. He'll start posting more frequently on the Courant's blog when the GHPA starts back up and there's actual news to report.

If Des didn't do such a terrible job on the UConn beat it wouldn't be a bad thing.

This. I don't care if every coach and player are from Connecticut. When we have to wait months between UCONN articles, seeing a positive piece on BC rubs me the wrong way. The only articles that should show up in the Connecticut media should be of the "our CR situation may sahq, but BC finished 2-10 last year" variety.

But seriously, how difficult would it be to find a guy who is invested in UCONN to cover the school's beat?

I was one complaining about Amore's coverage when he first took the beat job from Mike Anthony but I think he has done a better job than any of the other beat writers in the last year. As someone mentioned he went to 2 skills academies to talk to Napier and Boatright at one and then Daniels at another one. None of the other beat writers did that. He's taken a few rides up to Storrs in the last couple months to give us some updates. I think he went down to New York to watch the local Jordan Brand game to talk to Facey, Samuels and Brimah (who was there visiting his future teammates) when none of the other beat writers did. I can do some research and post more examples of him going above and beyond other beat writers if you want.

I think in general the coverage of the UConn men's basketball team has gone down the last few years. Budget cuts at all the newspapers is a big reason.

I'm most disappointed in Neil Ostrout of the JI. Seems the only articles he ever has are from UConn press releases. I don't need him to regurgitate the UConn press releases word for word. Even I could do that. The JI is the closest paper to Storrs and he never goes up there to report anything besides on games. What a huge step down from Phil Chardis.

I think Amore has done reasonably well - I do agree with the original poster about the typos.

If the Courant isn't going to pay an editor, Amore has to do a better job of proof-reading his stuff.

As for the rest of them, I'm not going to judge them. The business is falling apart around them and I don't think the newspapers are using these guys as beat writers anymore. They're answering phones, writing whatever the paper needs, etc., etc. I know one of the newspapers had its UConn "beat reporter" answering phones and recording high school scores during a road game last year.

The biggest loss is Duffy. Seemed like he and his paper had the drive/resources. Now we only have Amore and Borges.

I've noted this before but Dom was a Yankees beat writer. 162 games most ending late with a tight turn around time for the morning paper. You write down the major stuff, the big plays, who scored and snag a couple of quotes after the end of game and bang it out. He wrote like that when he first came over to the UConn beat. It was very formulaic coverage. I do think that he's doing better.

By far the best coverage was from Kevin Duffy. If he ever wanted the courant gig, you would have to figure it would be eventually his to lose.

Also, small, but funny critique on Dom, is that he uses the 'hashtag' #UConnMen on his tweets, which defeats the purpose of using the hashtag, because anyone running a search on UConn isn't going to find his update at all. Seems like a small thing, but if you're a reporter you would think you would know about these things.

Syracuse. And Boston College.

It's time to fire Desmond Howard. Let's make some noise.

I don't watch much of College Gameday anymore, but I was under the impression that Desmond Howard is a decent contributor. Must be resting on his laurels as a Heisman Trophy Winner and Super Bowl MVP.

Stopped clicking on the Courant and any Courant blogs as my personal protest to that BCU bs and lack of decent, informative UConn coverage. I know it doesn't mean much but it does to me.
