I wish I knew more about it and the rationale. Arlington is a great place to be laid to rest.

RMB - If I read the article correctly the WASP's were never "eligible" because they were not members of the armed forces. Apparently the recent decision to disallow them inurnment in Arlington was made to correct an earlier mistake and to bring inurnment and interment in line with existing law. Because they were finally recognized as WW2 vets they meet the eligibility requirements for VA Cemetery burial. Eligibility

IMO this says it all - "However, most veterans, who have at least one day of active service for other than training and an Honorable Discharge, are eligible for above-ground inurnment."

The WASPS did not meet those underlined requirements. I guess the same is true for those that served in the merchant marine. I don't have a problem with WASPS being denied inurnment at Arlington, IMO they were no different than their male civilian counterparts, but I think the law as written really screws the merchant marines who suffered terrible combat losses in WW2.

To me it is a mean spirited decision. [removed political content] Still, since Arlington cannot keep who is buried where straight, perhaps this jerk's decision is a blessing.
