Nothing in sports management is as important or more difficult than assessing talent. This is the vital win/lose, succeed/fail challenge constantly facing coaches, scouts, recruiters, or general managers at college program or pro franchise levels. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to suggest that the very livelihoods of people engaged in this process are largely dependent on their acumen. And most difficult of all is the task of projecting how an athlete will perform at the next level.

Case in point. The NFL draft was just completed. Volumes have already been written by analysts - "experts" all - grading each team, and even each pick (all 253 of them). Archives burst with account of "busts" in past years, and the supply is abundant.

The WNBA draft concluded recently and the NBA's is coming up soon. The same script applies. I commend my fellow Boneyarders who are undaunted by this formidable challenge and who, with admirable intrepidity, forge ahead with precise projections about who will start; which 1-2-3-4-5 position; how many points/minutes/rebounds/assists per game; and even whom will reside in Geno's Doghouse. All this with no "eye test!"

Fascinating reading for me. I won't join in, nor will I ever say, "i told you so!" if you misfire. My lone prediction: "I like our chances.":)
