My brother lives just outside Dayton, which is entirely too close to Columbus for his liking. He refers to tOSU fans as Bucknuts. This is probably pouring more fuel on his dislike for them.

Seems like people that are not alumni or fans still refer to them as tOSu rather just OSU

Ohio State seeks to trademark the word 'The'

This is totally a Buckeye thing to do. It's like no one else in the world uses The but them.
What? You mean Stanford hasn’t tried to patent “The Stanford University”? Shocked I am, shocked!

I lived in Columbus for a few years, and there was nothing more annoying than to have some blowhard "correct" me when I refused to preface "Ohio State" with "the."

Of all the things an institution can try to use to distinguish itself, this one stretches the limits of triviality.

I got a kick out of this. If you go to Virginia and see a bumper sticker that says THE University, it's UVA. OTOH, Washington and Lee has a sticker that says "Washington and Lee is THE university in Virginia." I dunno if it's official, but my graduate advisor once corrected a paper I was submitting when I neglected a "the" before University of Virginia.

Anywho, I think there's enough "prior usage" that OSU can't trademark it. Oh, by "it" I mean "the".

Remember when Jeb Bush tried to trademark his name so that his opponent in his re-election campaign couldn't say Jeb's name?
