I am reliably informed that The Hour newspaper will shut down its presses in a very few days after 140 years of publishing service to the Norwalk community.

This is a sad event for us Norwalkers. We have been accustomed to Our Home Town Newspaper providing daily news about our municipal government, communities, schools, and obituaries. Somehow the staff covered all sports for two high schools, plus Little League, Legion Baseball, and Pop Warner Football. There were of course other sports topics, including Calvin Murphy, Rita Williams, Mo Vaughn and, yes, the UConn Huskies.

I am proud to personally attest to the dedicated support that The Hour has faithfully provided to the veterans' community. We are all grateful.

I could go on. Like my extended neighbors, I am conflicted between sad thought about the prospect of losing a dear old friend and anxiety about the future source, if any, for local or regional news.

Like all good (or bad things) this too shall pass--written often. The world loves it's electronic devices and that will only grow larger. Those who have not begun to use the printed word are missing the world within their own minds unleashed by the printed media.
Calvin Murphy--is little noted nor long remembered except by us few old enough to remember his play---long ball shooter who at (I believe) 5 ft 10 inches (or shorter) could dunk.
Anxiety happens because you know what you are going to miss --with no knowledge of what the future brings--like the title of your posting--what will the Final Hour bring?
Veteran support is a two way street that many Veterans forget---you should support those that support you!! Veterans should "give back" too.

It now appears that my well-intentioned obituary for The Hour was premature. Here is what apparently occurred to lead me - and others - astray:
1. The Hearst Corporation bought The Hour.
2. Hearst already owns every other daily newspaper in Fairfield County: Greenwich Time, Stamford Advocate, Danbury Times-Union, and Connecticut (Bridgeport) Post.
3. Attorney General Jepson appeared to be ready to act, possibly to block the deal.
4. My normally impeccable source posted (Facebook, April 14) his belief that The Hour was doomed to imminent extinction.
5. I was convinced.
My source was no mere gadfly. He has been a close friend for 35+ years. He was a reporter for The Hour for about 20 years and has maintained close ties with the paper's staff. All of which persuaded me to write that "I am reliably informed. . ."

Mea Culpa.:(
