I either read or more probably heard on TV’s Antique Road Show this story of an antique dealer explaining patina to one of his customers. “Today you are a lovely woman of 60 years, however, you are not the same woman you were at age 20. The difference is patina.” Patina is wear or oxidation which antique collectors want usually. They want their antique to look old. However, they are selective about what should retain its patina (e.g., furniture) and what should not (e.g., paintings).

14. Patina is basically the effect of age on an object. In the antique and collectibles world things are generally determined to be more valuable when they show some effects of aging while remaining in otherwise good condition. Refinishing an antique piece of furniture for example generally reduces its value.

14..That's one open-ended question! In many cases, if you're trying to sell something that has too much patina, you're not going to get anywhere because it just looks crappy. In other cases, if you remove the patina by polishing or by chemical means, it will decrease the value -- it may no longer be "vintage" or "antique", or if you're polishing and you don't know what you're doing, you may remove too much material. But if you have something really famous, say a trumpet that Louis Armstrong played, then you REALLY want to leave the patina on; it's literally the product of his efforts.
