Have no idea what's going to be done about the boating races -- lots of athletes are skeered of that nasty, polluted dreck for good reason.

Plus I read somewhere that it may already be too late to do much about it as far as the Olympic events go at least ??

Just finished an article in today's Boston Globe, about 13 American rowers who came down with GI illness after a recent meet down there. More and more, it looks like Rio isn't ready, and won't be.

In Rio there is an inland lagoon (Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas) behind the main Southern beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. A canal runs from the lagoon to the ocean, and separates Ipanema from Lablon. If you don't know not to swim in the ocean at Ipanema or Lablon, all it takes is getting a little closer to the canal - it dumps raw sewage into the ocean right at the shoreline. Way up above the lagoon is the Corcovado - the famous Christ statue. The lagoon smells so bad you can almost smell it from up there.

I don't know where the swimming and boating venues are, but suspect the lagoon is one of them. They either don't 'get' water treatment there, or they just don't have the resources to deal with it properly. Maybe this will be an excuse for them to finally make some much-needed infrastructure improvements.

sounds like a basic question for cities vying for Olympics..unless the key question asked is "How much money do we get for selecting you?"

I was on the water in Rio all day today in areas that will be used for the Olympic sailing events. The water seems OK and I am not aware of any significant health issues among many sailors who have been training in the venue for the past year. I'm sure the water could be better and everyone here is in favor of clean water, but in general it seems the problems have been overstated. Not sure about rowing, which is on the lagoon, or triathlon swimming near Copacabana beach. Btw, I'm a huge fan of UConn women's bball, but lurker so far on this forum, took Rio water to get me to make first post!

Um, I think I'll hang out at the beach bars at Ipanema and Copacabana. ;)

You can park your butt in the sand across from the hotels and kids will bring you another caipirinha or a freshly-punctured coconut for about $1

Seems to me all who say, "Come in, the water is fine!" should be invited to go swimming... often.
