A gold alternative to keep it simple. Previously it was FOMO driving the whole asset class up. There is not yet the perception that other crypto assets ( the Alts) can be relied on as a store of value like BTC and much of the buying has come from large companies and hedge funds which is relatively new to the crypto market on this scale.
