It can be seen as political commentary or as social commentary. For instance in one example, one sees how women, brutalized and treated as second class chattel overcome this stigmata becoming hardened, realistic survivors, and the only ones fit to rule. It can be seen purely as fantasy with its dragons, undead, near dead, magic and other unlikely or unimaginable events. It can be seen as a show of bombast and sensationalism where viewers are warned not to become attached to characters or perceived story lines. Or you can simply marvel at the mind of G.RR Martin who envisioned this web, this "Strum and Drang" and somehow with this stew of near anachronisms found a world wide nerve.
