Eli was The Ugly in that olde-timey western...a great one. Eli Wallach passed away
yesterday at 98...yikes! Loved the recurring theme song.

Great Actor. Played a wide array of roles.

98! Now that's a GREAT RUN. I'll sign up for 98 right now. Where do I sign?

I liked him best as Calvera in "The Magnificent Seven", which also had a great musical score.

Saw him off-Broadway in a virtual one man play when he was in his 70s. The day was memorable as much for the fact that my car was broken into near Union Sq. then for the play. For the record, the thief got away with my suitcase that had only dirty laundry on it. The case was much worse than the contents. Anyway, Eli was magnificent.

Loved Eli. The news brought back a particular memory.

Saw The Good, The Bad under unusual circumstances -- at a cinema in Mogadishu, Somalia during my Peace Corps stint. Whispered the English-to-Somali translation to my Somali girlfriend the whole time. Fortunately The Man With No Name was also a man of few words, so I had plenty of time to get it right.

A few small stones chucked our way on the street as we left. Didn't turn to see from whom. Men and women weren't supposed to be together on the sidewalk in that culture (though two men would commonly walk together holding hands). Probably the same now -- assuming there are any sidewalks left after decades of civil war.

Wonder if Hollywood ever saw a nickle out of the performances in Mogadishu. People rob us blind while they chuck rocks at us in much of the world.
