RIP. His voice was great for the NFL to market part of it's vintage era. The 1920s-1950s are a ghost era sadly. The NFL gained stability during and after the 1960s AFL years.

It wasn't his voice, Butch. It was his smarts. The voice was John Facenda, than Harry Kalas.

Repeats of the Best of NFL Films Presents were on ESPN2 in the afternoons when I was in college. I watched it so religiously, I can still hear the opening where a QB (Joe Montana, If I recall) shouts, "Blue 89 Razor!!!!" Good Times.

Sabol was the guy in the barkalounger introducing the video(s) about to be shown.

Vintage piece on Lombardi - narrated by John Facenda. Classic stuff by NFL Films.

The idea to use a Speak 'n Spell, kazoo, and New Years Eve noise maker to bleep out profanity was pure genious. I want to set that as my ring tone for when my mother calls (just kidding)!

I would say that he and his family are probably one of the top 5 reasons (if not top 2) why the NFL surged to the popularity that it did. I think about 95% of the fan base got hooked on the NFL because of those awesome videos that NFL Films produced. I know I did.

I guess I'd be amongst the 5%. NFL Films is legendary, regardless.

Football has slo mo, audio on players, and many many other things came from him and his dad.

My prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace
