One of my all-time favorite artists has passed. He had the lyrics of Bob Dylan with such sweet, smooth and soulful voice, not to mention he was one hell of a guitarist. His voice held up until the end, god bless Richie Havens.
I saw him a few years ago at the Kmart plaza in Southbury. I recognized him from the Married With Children episode where Al Bundy pretends to be a rock star to get into the VIP lounge at the airport. I don't like to bother celebrities in their normal lives so I didn't talk to him. He was alone and driving an average car and must have been going to a show and stopped to check directions. I got the impression he was a regular guy trying to get by, not a pampered celeb. Rest in peace.
I believe Ricie Havens lived in New Haven and may not be his real name. I used to see him around Hartford in the 80's at live music venues. I never really talked to him but he was friendly guy and the local muscians at the time all knew him well. A true artist, RIP.
Richie was scheduled to be the fifth artist to play at Woodstock but ending up leading off because everyone else was late. He was asked to drag out the songs till other performers got there. I remember the long drum solo going on forever.
I saw Richie Havens at the Capital Theater in Port Chester New York, in 1970-71. He cam on at about 11 pm after Paul Butterfield Blues and played until 3 am. He broke several guitar strings during the night but breaking the last one during is final song prompted an "Ah ef it" and he played on. Loved his music
