Legendary hip-hop artist MCA from the Beastie Boys has passed away. This just caps off an awful week, Adam Yauch my favorite Beastie and one of my favorite artists. Music just won't be the same anymore.

Terrible news and a huge loss. The BB's 1989 "Paul's Boutique" is a seminal rap LP. There are no less than 100 samples on that record, some more obscure than others. I'm a classic rock/Americana/Power Pop guy but not counting compilations, the only rap CD's I own are by the Beastie Boys.

In 1985, I took my girlfriend at the time to see Madonna's "Like a Virgin" tour at the New Haven Coliseum. The unknown Beastie Boys were the warm up act. This was a full 2 years before "Fight for your right"...They got booed off the stage by the 12,000 Madonna wannabee's and most of their dates...By the end of the year, they were on tour with Whodini, RUN DMC and LL Cool J. Who knew they would eventually help break rap into the mainstream like they did?

Paul's Boutique was a phenomenal CD. The absolute best the Beasties had to offer. The creativity and uniqueness was just unreal. One of my all-time favorite shows was the Beasties tibetan freedom concert at Randall Island. RIP.

That was a hell of show. I say the bboys about 8 times.
Say them with rage once and it was nuts. Also say them at the roseland in nyc for I think a radio station release for Ill Communication. Tix profit went to free tibet and they almost played for three hours

I saw Rage and Wu Tang in the Meadows, had pit tickets. Zack did a little freestylin' with the Wu and kinda' kicked their asses.

Not uncommon for the era. It was that era between "White Lines" and the" Walk this Way" remake with Run DMC when rap nearly died. Lou Reed had a DJ rap duo open at the Agora in 84. Instantly booed. Maybe if they had Eddie Martinez doing the Rock Box Run-DMC cross over --that would have played well as MTV played it quite a bit (the only rap track they would play in 84). Two DJs playing records and scratching and making noise and a single rapper was just too radical and lo tech for that era.

Wu had great albums, but never say a great show by them. To many people on stage and the sound was never correct.

I loved bands like Bboys and radiohead who turned the music industry upside down and did it their own way

The Beasties were the soundtrack to every party I went to in college. I remember being on a bus on spring break with a box in back blaring " No Sleep Til Brooklyn" and the entire bus screaming every word. Good times.

I remember working a great summer job and to annoy the #$^^% out of the bosses we would sing "Ali Baba and the 40 thieves" loudly and without end.

Good times.

Beasties solo at the Flint Center in Cupertino, CA in June 1987 was one of the best shows ive ever seen. Two nights later, the Beasties and Run DMC at the Shoreline Amphitheatre was also one for the ages. Amazingly, we saw Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Cinderella the next night at Shoreline. Without a doubt, one of the best run of concerts a guy could ask for.
