538 appears to show that refs standing on sidelines near coaches are highly influenced by presence of coaches: NFL Coaches Yell At Refs Because It Freakin’ Works

Note to DBs: if you're chasing a player near your own sidelines, you may get more allowance from a ref.

Yeah I was going to post this too and completely forgot. It's a really good article that definitely seems to have some merit. I'd imagine it's the same for all sports, too.
