Was sitting in the Mystic Seaport Tavern having a Seaport (Maine) and lunch waiting for the re-launch of the CW Morgan, the only remaining wooden whaler of the day, as the winner of the British Open finished. Amazing how many folks in bar were really tweeked to the golf.

CWM has been in drydock to repair significant portions of its hull for almost 5 years. The re-launch today coincides with the 172th anniversary of its original launch in 1841 - at the start of the great US economic and geographic expansion. Whale oil was the initial forey of the energy revolution, and whaling the first global industry.

After lunch, mozied to the launch site on the Seaport grounds. BIG crowd. Very traditional afternoon of listening to a band concert on the village green. Ric Burns delivered the keynote address, and music was provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Band (how to top that?). Sarah Bullard, the great-great-great granddaughter of Charles W Morgan, broke a bottle over the Morgan‘s bow to christen the ship, and the vessel was lowered into the Mystic River. Very moving ceremony. Ken Burns is a great speaker, and delivered a great script of historical relevance. Politicians were not tooooo bad.

CWM will take its 38th voyage next year touring NE seaports. Yes, it now floats and is seaworthy. What a marvelous restoration by the MS crew!!

Program will be available on Youtube.

What trivialata were you immersed in today during this great historic event????
