Way out of left field here....

I follow a handful of current students on Twitter, some of whom might even post here...who knows. Generally, I love their irrational passion (reminds me of me and my friends 15/20 years ago)...they are so easily fired up, etc...

but it seems without fail they have this inexplicable love affair with international soccer and country music

I can't comprehend this, boggles my mind. I didn't know a single kid who liked either when I was there in the mid-90's

Soccer caught on that fast? Wow. Good thing we got 3 men's titles in soccer.

The Boneyard is one of a select few college football messageboards in the nation that would complain about Country music.

Football and Country music go together like bread and butter.

As a recent grad I can tell you country music is huge now. Pretty much all my friends are now on board (even the ones who hated it just a few years ago). I think its the upbeat fun songs and the death of rock. Really what new real rock songs are released now? Country has pretty much merged with and taken its place.

As for soccer, I dont know a single person who likes, or can even stand watching it (other then my one friend from Brazil). So cant help you there.

I was up at UConn in the mid-90's, and I love soccer (both international and in the US). It also helps that UConn has a rich tradition in both men's and women's soccer, as Butchy alluded to. As HuskyfanDan has already posted in a different thread, UConn men's soccer is ranked in the top 5 in the preseason polls.

In short, the words "UConn" and "soccer" go quite well together...

this is really depressing to read, but it does explain why i haven't bought a new CD in over 10 years

I worked at every soccer game for 4 years and have no issues with kids cheering for any UConn team, that's to be expected. I enjoyed college soccer, it was a great environment.

My observations was more international, I guess......for example, you'll see a UConn tweet followed by some thing about some random 1-name guy from Brazil being sold to some team in Spain and by the way Zac Brown has a new song.

Im all for people having varying tastes in music, sports, etc.....and even though the sample size is minuscule, it just struck me as odd

International soccer tv ratings are insane on weekday afternoons because of college kids.

That's not limited to UConn.

well played sir...well played
Haha just gave you a follow. And out of pure coincidence some of my most recent tweets were about Taylor Swift and the USA/Brazil game from last week.

if you ever have the chance to watch an int'l soccer "match" with a foreigner that's really passionate about it i advise you do it. they love it so much their enthusiasm is infectious. i actually watched about 3 hours of Eurocup at a bar this summer and was able to enjoy it. of course anything at a bar on a weekday afternoon is enjoyable

I get international soccer between nations. I don't get international club soccer. I do like the relegation system and enjoy their disdain of playoffs.

You hit on one of the big things for college kids. It's on during the day.

To the rest of the world, club soccer is like the NFL. If the NFL had teams in every country and held multiple seasons at a time and went on for 30+ weeks per year.
