A friend of a friend has a very talented son who is a distance and cross country runner. When I inquired about recruiting, she told me that coaches are forbidden to contact the high school athlete until fall of senior year. Further, claimed that no scholarship offer could be made until senior year.

Neither strikes me as accurate. Am I missing something here? Know this isn't b-ball, but just curious, especially since I have long heard about high school recruits' leaving Storrs either in their junior year or sophomore with scholarship offers.

Care to enlighten?

Your friend of a friend sounds confused. A scholarship offer can be extended at anytime/age. Offering to grade schools kids has become routine in many places including Louisville WBB. For basketball the scholarship cannot be formally accepted (via NLI) until fall of Senior year. Other sports might be on a different calendar. Check here.
