I see that the commish is speaking at 2 this afternoon on the Sterling mess.

Question: I read that 3 or 4 years ago the local NAACP chapter in Los Angeles gave him a lifetime achievement award. And...until the recent uglin ess... was going to give him a second lifetime award in a couple of months.

It seems apparent that his 'lifetime' has been littered with a variety of ugly prejudices combined with illegal
practices that resulted in suits and huge fines....all in the public eye out there.

Why did they honor him...and why were they about to do it again?

Why else? Money, money, money.

He donated to the LA chapter for youth services. He bought tickets for kids who would never be able to attend.

Pretty good article about this exact question.

I think he has fooled a lot of people for a long time.....The tape revealed his true personality and feelings, from his own mouth. No more mis-quotes , no more being falsely accused , no more lawyers winning a case when he was truly guilty.

Now it gets down to who do the NAACP believe , the Donald Sterling that they thought he was , or the Donald Sterling that they heard on the tape.

But my respect will be lost if I ever discover that the NAACP or its chapters had reduced black people to dollar signs, putting a price tag on my humanity and dignity.

Umm, Merlene, you pretty much just stated that the NAACP had in your article.

Apparently a new question coming up--new to me, anyway--is that Sterling said what he said in his own home on his own time, and is he to be judged on what he said in what he thought was privacy? The counterargument is that this is the way he's been for the past 30 years.

Weird. Supporting African-American causes and people and pushing them out of his life at the same time.

He really does have a slave owner mentality. Ex. He talks about his players saying look at all the things he gives them.

He didn't fool anyone. Everyone knew who Donald Sterling was, they just ignored it as long as he was buttering their bread. As long as he didn't have too many egregious outbursts, people could happily ignore the massive warts..

Social Media effectively made who Sterling is a ticking time bomb; it was only a matter of time until it all blew up for him.

He's a scumbag but so is Viviano. She amounts to what most people refer as a high priced "escort" who used a senile, old, (and ) rich guy. She felt couldn't use him anymore so she arranged all this. Kinda dumb of her when she could've just strung him along but maybe the lawsuit his wife was filing against her had something to do with it.
