My school hasn't supported printers for a few years. The IT admin believe every should print to the same printer/copier.

Bottom line: The 20 year old HP 4L I brought to school for use in my room, has died. Any suggestions for a desktop printer? Color is not needed, but speed is important. I'll be using it for drafts, and for last minute printing of a classroom set of papers (~30 sheets).

do you care if it's laser or inkjet? HP M451 is a pretty solid one if you don't mind shelling out for a nice laser. I actually do a lot of work on that model and remanufactured cartridges aren't too hard to come by when you need to replace

also, do you need a multifunction or just printer?

edit: just saw color wasn't needed...I work primarily with HP so that's what I know best, but the 4515 or 4000 are both solid monochrome printers

If you don't need color and plan to do a lot of printing look for a decent laser printer (you should be able to find a capable one for ~ $125). They are much faster than ink jets and toner (the real cost of printers) is far cheaper per copy.
