Planning a trip out west at the end of summer. How is the Phoenix/ Glendale area? Probably spending a night or two there but was wondering what there is to do? The bar scene, sights, etc... I'm going to the Grand Canyon after Phoenix

Many years ago stayed in a Scottsdale resort and it was gorgeous. Shocking there is not much grass out there. I had wondered if they even sell lawn mowers. Played golf in Scottsdale, nice courses out there too.

About 5 years ago the wife and I took a road trip from CT to Vegas (flew back though).

Went to red rock attraction in AZ which was nice. Stayed in Flagstaff on our way to Grand Canyon, then saw some car show in Kingsman AZ on our way to Hoover Dam then Las Vegas.

I will say being from the East Coast; Sante Fe NM, Western TX and AZ all look similar. No water, no grass out there (desert scenery) and more cactus than people. Land is vast, when people die out there its the mailman who usually finds out.

After that trip I did confirm that I'm a water man (ocean, lakes and rivers). Funny thing is i'm going to Vegas Friday so I better not complain too much.

I go to the area a few times a year for work. I usually stay at one of the hotels in the shadow of University of Phoenix stadium. Westgate Entertain is a ready made entertainment district right there. Literally every type of food at every price range you could possibly want.

Middle/end of summer is down time there. Temperatures are blazing. Get out early in the morning and then find AC by noon.

Other than the Cardinals and Coyotes ( Hockey Kind) then isn't much in the West Valley.
End of Summer is not for the faint hearted
But I golfed everyday during the summer
Thats the bad news , the good news is the place is pretty deserted and you can get incredible low rates on places like the TPC course, Troon North and a hundreds of others.

Pheonix is a dust bowl, Scottsdale is nice, so is the drive up to Flagstaff.

The drive between Flagstaff and Sedona is pretty great too, although not recommended if you're squeamish about hairpin turns at (exceptionally) high elevation.

It's worth spending a couple days in Sedona, some great hikes and whatnot. I've stayed at Enchantment and L'Auberge and they're both pretty nice. I refused to check out of our room at Enchantment until the MSU elite eight game at the Garden ended.

I dreaded it every time I had to go down to Phoenix for work. Hot as hell, and not a whole lot to do unless you're where Chin Diesel mentioned. I guess it got an even worse deal for me, because usually any time I had to go to Phoenix the next stop was going to be middle of nowhere Mexico to the factory...

If I'm going to meteor crater and the Grand Canyon would you guys recommend staying in flagstaff for a night? I plan on camping at the GC, would you take a night in flagstaff/Phoenix or use that night at the GC?

I've been to Phoenix / Scottsdale probably dozens of times for business/vacations. End of October should be great. Here are some comments / suggestions:
  • Not sure on your reason for being there, but unless something is bringing you to Glendale, I'd suggest Phoenix / Scottsdale over Glendale. I've never been to Glendale, but haven't heard that there is any reason to go there over Phoenix/Scottsdale. The NFL pissed off Glendale because they had all of their fan events in Phoenix, not Glendale. There are some beautiful resorts in both Phoenix and Scottsdale. Budget will obviously matter. I really like the Biltmore in Phoenix. Really cool history and vibe.
  • There are some solid restaurants. It's a hike to get there (North Scottsdale) but the original Mastros is still my favorite steak house in the country (I'm sure that will start a "best steak house" fight). They have other restaurants in the area which are good if more convenient, and nationally (Beverly Hills, Costa Mesa, Vegas, NY), but the original was great (haven't been to the original in like 5 years+).
  • I've never been to Sedona, but I've heard it's beautiful. Definitely seems like it would be worth a stop.
  • I'm also more of a woods/lake/shore person over the desert. I think it's because the desert looks... deserted. You need to get out there and walk/hike the desert. Hike the canyon, don't just take a bus tour. Bring lots of water! I may not want to move there, but it can be beautiful.
  • I can't speak for October, but when I went to the Canyon in the summer we couldn't get lodging in the park. It is (or used to be) hard to get space in national parks. I was there with a friend after college so we were looking for cheap lodging camping and ended up at a nice KOA outside the park.

I actually live in Phoenix (Surprise which is 15-20 min from Glendale) and work in Scottsdale. There is definitely a lot more to do in Scottsdale area then Glendale. Best area in Glendale is by stadium-restaurants, bars, new casino & outlets. October is nice but still very warm. Good hiking around, AZ State Fair (all of Oct.), Frank Lloyd Wright museum, Musical Instrument Museum (run by a UConn alum)Wrigley Mansion. In Scottsdale, I like Fiesta Bowl Museum (they have UConn stuff), the Waterfront and Old Town Scottsdale.

That's if you take 89A through Oak Creek Canyon to Flag.
Uphill is a lot wimpery than downhill. The temp change in a 5 mile strech is amazing. Elevation goes from 4500 to almost 8000 feet in that stretch.
My wife does the drive and she famously wouldn't go over the old Jamestown Bridge.
If your a afraid just go back to I17.
If you do hit Montezuma's castle.
The scenic road takes you out of the desert and into the woods quickly You go by slide Rock a huge rock in the creek that kids use as a natural water slide. After that it's mostly National Forrest. Cactus disappear around 4,000 ft
I would stay over a Flag simply because the weather is great, maybe even a little cool at night. Your around 8,000ft above sea level. It a college town that is great place to have lunch
Scottsdale is the place for resorts.
But there are close to 300 golf courses all over the Phoenix area.
I love my course but I'm a little out of the way.
Early Oct in the Phoenix Area is over seeding time .
Bermuda to Rye as nights are cool in the desert.
Lots of Golf courses even close. Check their schedules before you go.
Prices usually stay low as the birds don't return until after over seeding.

Not a fan of the Phoenix area in general, too hot, too brown; but, that's just me. Instead of staying in the Phoenix area on your way to the Grand Canyon, which is my own bucket list, what about spending a day in Sedona? In the time before children, I went to a wedding in Scottsdale and then spent the next 2 days in Sedona with my wife and enjoyed it. Beautiful place.

PS - If you are not traveling with a significant other and if schools are back in session while you are visiting, strongly recommend spending an evening enjoying the scenery in Tempe around the ASU campus. I went Tempe for work in October once and that place made me wish I was 20 something again.

I've only driven through Flagstaff. I do think Sedona is worth seeing though.

Sorry I'm not the one to ask. @BigErnMcCracken, @Jkhusky91, @AZHuskiePop and others are better informed. I stayed in Flagstaff coming from Sante Fe NM the night before, because it was a less than 2 hour drive to the Canyon. In fact I can't even describe what part of the Canyon I was at, but I'll be damned if it wasn't the most awesome thing I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot.

Flagstaff was good also because after the Canyon I could go back and rest and press on towards Las Vegas (via Hoover Dam). I don't recall much to do in the evening that night.

I did the Route 66 route out of Tenn. (Rte 40), although some of the old 66 still exists there ain't much left. Seeing the Santa Fe train was cool though and the wild horses.

Shocking to see how some of the Indians live in those shacks along the highway.

Would you guys recommend a night flagstaff instead of the Phoenix/Glendale? Real going to az for the grand canyon, and might camp there, and some other sites. Not too many days. Consensus seems to be Phoenix isn't the best place to stay or visit.

Flagstaff is nice. Late summer, early fall is great weather. I think Flagstaff is about 6000' above sea level. There are green trees, cool air and scenery is beautiful. It's a nice place to spend a night. You can fill out your time there over 1-2 days.

It's been a while, but we did the drive from St. George's to Flagstaff (north rim and all that) and it's was great. That's as south as we went. We shot up to Farmington, NM and Durango and the San Juans on the way back to the midwest.
