turns out abuse settlements went back to 1971. Way prior to when was first reported the school and coach knew. 23 years prior to 1994. There is not an awful enough place for coach and State to burn.

I grew up idolizing Joe Paterno and Penn State. I thought they were the epitome of integrity and hardwork and Paterno was the ultimate class act. It turns out he was a complete fraud yet some fools in the Penn State community still worship the guy. I wonder if the statues coming down again? How about they add Sandusky to the statue pounding him in the ? I can't believe at one time I advocated for Sandusky to coach UCONN.

One of the biggest scumbags in sports history, and Penn State is clearly the dirtiest institution in college football.

Happy Valley sure turned out to be a sick place and the lovable old Italian guy turned out to be a sick little fraud.

Happy Valley is almost like a cult and the community has been brainwashed into believing JoePa is their leader and can do no wrong.

Anyone listen to the interview on WEEI in Boston this morning with the guy saying Paterno and Sandusky are innocent? Craziness

My SO is from Pennsylvania. Her family still either defend him or completely avoid talking about it and acting like it never happened. Sickening.

I still dont think PSU got punished enough they should have have been given the death penalty for a good 5 years. Who knows how many kids Sandusky got his hands on, your talking a good 40 years at least with easy access to kids. There still doesn't seem to be enough remorse from PSU administration or community, its like lets wash our hands ok now back to football just sickening.

The oddest part to me is Paterno's family still attempting to "clear" his name. What could they possibly be thinking, when the obvious thing to do is to curl up and a corner and hope nobody recognizes you?

They're doing it because they're surrounded by a bunch of lunatics that actually believe that the dude is innocent. They're shielded from reality.

People have posted such craziness on the Bonyard. I've seen people admonished for any Paterno criticism. Where these folks now?

There are a bazillion examples that demonstrate reality is an illusion and what we think is real! How do I know this? Because I'm unreal dude!

I went there in the early nineties, (I'm from PA) it is actually when I became a UConn fan (Donyell was from my neck of the woods and Ray won me over for good!) and Penn State was such a strange culture then for me. I was from the suburbs but it was definitely more backwater, redneck than I was used to. For example, I had a Randall Cunningham poster in my room (I know it shoulda been hot chicks!) and I got so many racist comments about blacks shouldn't be QBs etc. It was a very racist place and I didn't grow up around a ton of minorities but didn't share those feelings.

Paterno was treated as a deity and that's never healthy. Sandusky was often looked at as the heir apparent and definitely the assistant the fans loved most as it was Linebacker U at one point. I think about my warm feelings for JC (that's putting it extremely mildly as a I have a picture in my office with him) but I never thought he nor any man is infallible (including myself!)

It was such an odd culture as I said before. It was PSU Football 24/7/365. The football players were above the law (like they are at many schools I know) but it was such a lemming mentality about PSU football that I never got. The game was passing Paterno by for years and I actually worked in the media covering PSU for a few years when they had a sub .500 or close to it record over that 3-4 year span and yet still people thought him and the staff were on track and never really clamored for change. I never understood that.

Eagles fan? I'm not overly familiar w/ PA geography but I'm assuming you grew up closer to Philly than PSU.

About similar distance. Was an Eagles fan in the mid 80s until about 2000 (when they started getting good ironically!). McNabb kinda ended it for me, was not a fan of him at all and I live in Florida now and play fantasy football so I'm team agnostic in the NFL!

Sandusky is a predator of the highest order. Not only did he do all of the horrid things to these kids but he actually groomed them over time to make them semi-willing participants. It is one of the many reasons they stay quiet about it for so long. The idea that Joe P didn't know was always laughable. Sandusky's abuse was far to widespread in quantity and longevity for them not to know. The idea that the family is still trying to clear Joe's name is just the ultimate in stupidity. As @TasteofUConn stated you would think they would be hiding out and letting the smoke clear. There is no good outcome for them on this one.

I hate those guys haha. Can't entirely blame you though with the way Eagles football tends to go.

I agree. I live in Penn State country. You are right, seems like Paterno knew for years. To include staff. Fans around Harrisburg used to tell me Paterno will leave Football when he wants to. Well, History revised. What seems odd to me was Paterno died of cancer shortly after the shake up. Seems like nobody had a clue about it.No doubt family. Well anyway.

Everybody deserves a mulligan now and again. EDIT: You, not Sandusky.

That whole university is brainwashed and luckily will never recover from this scandal. They can keep denying the Paterno/Sandusky stuff all they want, they will never be what they were again, never.

Yeah, with everything Syracuse was accused of and investigated for over the past 15-20 years, why wasn't the Bernie Fine saga part of it? Was it only because nobody could prosecute him anymore because the statute of limitations had already run? Is that the measure of the NCAA's reach in these cases?

I grew up a Penn State fan while were still 1-AA. I finally went out there to see a game, vs Bama in 2011, and the culture there was WEIRD. Very cult-like. Many people knock Storrs for being remote but man, is Happy Valley an odd little bubble out in the middle of nowhere.
