If pressed to pick my favorite guitarist right now, it would have to be Pat Metheny. Professor
Pat is crisp, clear, concise, innovative, imaginative, inspriational; And can play the heck out of a guitar.
Hubert Sumlin is another of my favorites.

What say the rest of you?

Oh, oh. Admittedly, I am not at all familiar with David Gilmour. Research and some intense listening forthcoming.

If you wish to include resonophonic instruments, all of the above adjectives apply to Jerry Douglas ... and more. Bluegrass, ethnic folk, jazz, new age, ... you name it.

Before I can even think of responding one way or another, I must familiarize myself with the word "resonophonic".:)

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to see Andres Segovia at the Bushnell in Hartford. He was 80 something then, I think, and his fingers danced. Still the best I've ever seen. John Williams is probably second.

Resonophonic is in, as is Jerry Douglas. I am partial to pickers(Hopefully, that is not an insult to Jerry Douglas).

It never ceases to amaze me how complementary talented people tend to find each other; As if by providence.

Only one mention of Hendrix so far in this thread.....?!?!??!

Crazy.

Definitely one of a kind. Earlier on, he was the Isley Brothers guitarist, and was a major influence on Ernie Isley's style; a style that totally resurrected the Isley Brothers.

There are simply too many great guitarists and a multitude of styles. Hendrix of course should be on any list. I saw him at Woolsey Hall when I was in 8th grade. It was a transcendent experience. For those loving jazz Django and Les Paul belong on any list.

Duane Allman, Leo Kotke, John Fahey and Santana are four more to toss into the discussion as were Jeff Beck and Mike Bloomfield mentioned earlier.
Classically Julian Bream and a host of others exist.

A great summary list of many greats LINK

Click on any image and a sample of their playing is available for most. If one doesn't remember just how good Les Paul was check him out.

Ahh, the luxury of much greatness. Too many greats, too many genres. Django for sure (thanks for Joscho Stephan). I don't think anyone mentioned Charlie Christian. And then there's ... Manitas da Plata.

Hilton Valentine(Animals), who played in Wallingford a few years back, strikes a chord with me.
