, , ,"reigning in" anything we want to curtail!

You wanna slow it down, you "rein it in," like a rider on a horse.

Change of coaches? One leaving turns over "the reins" (control) to the one taking over.

And, just for good measure, Queen Elizabeth continues to reign over the British Empire and UConn is the reigning wcbb champ.

P.S. Dire straits (not straights) and no holds barred (not bared).
Head bang

Relatedly, Kib, to allow latitude or room to maneuver is to give someone "free rein," is it not? I often see people use the term "free reign" in this context. I believe the former usage is correct, as the phrase originally referred to horseback riding rather than an exercise of sovereignty, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong if I am wrong.

@Kibitzer here the one I really need help with. I always get confused.

Is it KLS is raining down threes-like rain pouring down from the sky?

Or is it KLS is reigning down threes like the queen of the court that she clearly is?

She takes control of the reins while reigning as court queen and rains down threes.

One problem is that some famous songs have confused us boomers over the years, like this one from The Who:

Love, Reign O'er Me

Only love can make it rain
The way the beach is kissed by the sea
Only love can make it rain
Like the sweat of lovers layin' in the fields

Love, reign o'er me
Love, reign o'er me
Rain on me, rain on me

Only love can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky
Only love can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high

Love, reign o'er me
Rain on me, rain on me
Love, reign o'er me
Rain on me, rain on me

On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool, cool rain

I can't sleep, and I lay, and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
Oh God, I need a drink of cool, cool rain

Love, reign o'er me
Reign o'er me, o'er me, o'er me
Love, reign o'er me, o'er me
Love

You and "free rein" (indicating loose control) are correct.

And, oh yeah, a reminder. The US Constitution prevents any president from having "free reign." ;)
