Have a bit of a concussion today, thanks to falling off the horse on a horseback ride today. I am very lucky, as I landed flat on my back (or so I am told - I don't remember) and lost consciousness for about 10 minutes. Good thing I opted for the helmet, but my poor sister thought I was dead!

One thing I can say about Mexico, their ERs are very efficient places. From arrival to discharge, 90 minutes if that and that included xrays and a CAT scan. And they gave me some pretty awesome drugs with a written prescription so I can bring them home with me. But, the dizziness, nausea and muscle spasms will take some time to go away.

Not looking forward to the plane ride home. 4 1/2 hours in a plane is going to be a beyotch!

Tiff - I feel your pain.

Many years ago my wife learned that horseback riding can be hazardous to your health. I sincerely hope everything is okay. Take it easy and get well!

Hey Chapette,
- Thanks a lot for sharing this regarding the concussion. Very glad you're feeling better – from more than just the drugs!
- I like Pap’s comment. It took me quite a while. Still love the horses, but learned part of the ‘fun’ is events turning quick and capriciously.
- My ‘Hats off’ to you. Just a great call grabbing that helmet; particularly since I honestly think it is not at all obvious to most folks. Certainly not me initially - despite my having always been a fanatic about wearing one on a motorcycle.
- Watching my girls in Combined Training's cross-country jumping, eventually dawned on me, it’s the only non-combat event I've attended where every contestant's blood-type is formally required to be prominently displayed! And, have gotten the impression most concussions seem to occur far less dramatically 'merely' in the walk, trot, or canter, just around the stables, no matter how experienced the rider. Excitable animal, long fall, mucho momentum.
- Nice going. You're so right,... even when riding on vacation, those helmets seem the only way to go. My youngest (seemingly on a first name basis with ambulance drivers, for a while there) swears by them, too!

Maybe the Mojitos before riding weren't such a good idea. Mojitos before watching Huskies playing, good idea, Mojitos before playing with horses, not so much.

Blessings and follow the doctor's orders.

Well, day two has me feeling worse. I am sore from my lower back up to my neck just below the scull - probably where the helmet made contact. And I look like I have gotten the short end of a bull fight with all the bruises covering my body.

I have about 500 ml of Kahluha that will go to waste, since the pain/muscle spasms through me for a loop but do take the edge off., but might not be a good mix with alcohol. Good thing what is left of the Kaluha only has about a $7 US value. So cheap here. I might still have some tonight since Kaluha has a fairly low alcohol volume.

After much debate, decided to request a wheelchair at the airport. Can't hurt and will make at least a portion of the trip home bearable. 4 1/2 hours in a windlow seat is not soundling like a lot of fun right now.

But...we haven't gone shopping yet, and there are some things I want to get so we are braving the busses. What the heck. I am already in a lot of pain. How much worse can it get?

We think that athletes should be able to bounce back from the injuries due to hits until we have those injuries ourselves--then we know what the effects really are and admire the athletes for getting back to the game as quickly as they do. A friend of mine got a bone bruise about a week after we were wondering why a football player who got one didn't go right back into the game ("It's only a bruise, right?"). She couldn't get off the couch for a week. The player was back in the game the following week. I learned a lot from that!

Take care of yourself, Chapette. I hope the plane ride back is better than you think. And atta girl for not passing on the shopping trip!

Chapette, hope you get to feeling better soon.

As to the other half of Monday's collision in Durham, here's a photo I took of Shay Selby at last night's Duke vs. Wake Forest game:

She's got the Roscoe Smith look (from last season during the UConn men's team's dramatic run).

Good to see she has no apparent ill effects after the collision. Tiff was involved in a pickup game with a comedian and his crew who came ot campus, so she seems to be good to go as well.

What drugs are you on? Binge drinking and prescription painkillers is a very bad idea, but a little bit of Kahlua isn't going to kill you.

Relax, Alex. I opted not to take the chance, though I hated pouring the Kahlua down the drain. Still, didn't want to make a bad situation even worse.

Flight home wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, once I got settled in the seat. Concussion headache is gone, but the vertigo and bad back pain definitely not ready to stop their little Fiesta they got going on. On a scale of 1-10, the back pain is down to about a 7 to occasional twinges of 8-9. Considreably down from the nearly constant 10 it was at the first night. Taking tomorrow off, and maybe Tuesday if I am still taking the pain/muscle relaxant meds. They make me very sleepy. Driving probably wouldn't be wise, either, until I can easily move my right leg between the accelerator and brake pedals without shooting pain.

Looking forward to my next trip, but will leave the horses to the "vaqueros" in the future.
