Was working in RI with a couple of sales associates this past Thursday and one of the guys had never visited Newport. So we stayed over there and checked out the town.

After a few cocktails by the marina at the Black Pearl we decided to have some dinner uptown by the Tennis HOF. We went to LaForge Casino Restaurant (granted my cousin works there but I had never eaten there) to check it out. We were seated outdoors on the baseline of the HOF grass court with a great view. The ambiance of the place is very nice, Newport old school....had a Cheers type setting with a few different areas to eat. A pub style are, the outside and a little more formal area also.

Anyway I've been to probably 90% of the pubs and restaurants in town and this was easily, for the dollar, the best over all. (no not because of my cousin, he's worked at every rest. in Newport since 1980 or so I think lol) The Oysters Rockafeller and the jumbo shrimp cocktial were superb starters.........3 guys had various dinners, I the filet which was perfection and the vegetables grilled and very tasty.........one guy had the Clams, shrimp, scallops dish which was plentiful and very good and other had a Sheppards Pie which was priced right and looked great. We then headed downtown
to Bruskers and closed the place which is a great local Irish pub.

Love Newport

Thx Mau

Actually headed there next weekend and usually end up at Black pearl outside, Christie's outside and either Brick alley or Red Parrot. More for kids. Would like to hit up White Horse and other places w/o kids.

Newport is awesome, coolest place anywhere during the summer.

Couple things about LaForge. It's one of the last places left in town where you can be a "regular", which I am. A bunch of us go once a week. It's also the last place left with no scene, no overly thought out, overly creative menu and no noise. Mike is the last of the old school bartenders, if one of us asks for something he doesn't have he sends someone across the street to get it. Our greatest fear is that the Crowleys get out and it becomes just another place.

Are you a Newport local Dry? ........... love the "townies" there always friendly for the many years I visited every summer............my uncle was a Captain in the Navy and was stationed at Fort Adams in the late 70's through the early 90's so many of my cousins either live or lived there for a long time, worked the local restaurants, managed them, bartended etc etc......just love the town and for whatever reason had never spent a lot of time up by the HOF always downtown.......Laforge was very good and you're description would seem to be perfect.

Lived here since '72. There's nothing trendy or even fun around that area. Art Museum, Redwood Library and mansions so I can see why you don't get up there much. I did my every 6 year trip to Brick Alley and had the Lobster Mac and Cheese. I'm not going to put it at the level of the loaves and fishes, but I can't understand how they can put so much fresh lobster in there for that price. Around the corner from LaForge on Memorial is Pasta Beach, owned by a couple from Torino. About as authentic Italian as you'll find.

We will def get to Brick Alley, wife loves the Lobster Reuben.

We were there over weekend and they were building a new restaurant just in from of 41 North. Looked like it would have rooftop bar. Is that open now?

You probably saw the Midtown Oyster Bar. Mary Salas' gave up Salas' Restaurant, listed in the old yellow pages as Guamanian, and it been being rebuilt all Summer. Salas' was another old landmark that's bit the dust, Christie's was bought by a rich woman named Dodo Hamilton that's become 41 North. This is how things are going here.

Are there any good outdoor bars now with cover bands? I remember back in 90s some one Bowman's wharf or close by and just the coolest places anywhere.

The Mouth of the South

Loved it when the America Cup races were held. Saw the last wooden sail left , the Endeaver, in the Cup race 1974 , Went to every up race including the last in '83-'84. It was such an exciting time meeting people from all over the world. Tied our boat up at Christies
right in the middle of everything. What a fun and exciting time.

Always a fun town then, the races........real fun when 24-25 and single and all kinds of talent running around from different lands..........

Used to see Kevin Stacom at the Black Pearl a lot too as he and partners owned a bar (forget the name) may be the Pelham now........Hank Finkel was there a few times too, a real gentleman and fun guy as was Kevin!! By the way Monday nights during the summer at the Pelham they have Bruce jacques, a must see for entertainment...music and a little comedy mixed, changing outfits for every song whether it be Queen, Boy George, the Stones etc etc......he's very good!

The America's Cup time was great fun. Stacom owns the Mudville Pub whose back deck is actually right on Cardine's Field right field foul line. Its a great little sports bar, just don't go when PC is on. He also owned a bar in town when he was the coach of the RI Gulls, so after every game we'd hang with Manute Bol, Hot Rod Williams and Spud Webb. They played at Rogers High. Cardines Field has a lot of history. Used to be called The Basin, Babe Ruth, Satchel Page and countless others barnstormed there.

91, you're probably thinking of The Landing at the end of Bowen's Wharf.

If you're in town for lunch try Rosemary and Thyme on Spring Street.
